How is it 5600?
Have a couple small trailers and i use the 18 ft tandem axle brakes on both axles 10k gvw .. 16 a bit short for most anything but my oval track car.. 20+ never needed.

Go as long as you can w/ 4 wheel brakes. Don't buy a trailer to fit your tractor. Buy the trailer you want and put your tractor on it.

18', brakes on both axles, backup lights.
basically a 'car hauler' sized trailer.
16' would be a 'tight' fit,though I haul bigger tractor with woodchipper on it.
Anything longer than 18' is a waste of fuel to haul.

Now IF you decide to add 'other stuff' on the hauling list, that'll change opinions BUT just the small tractor and BH, 16 or 18.

hmm, if true why does it cost more for me to fly a fully loaded plane than one without passengers and 1/2 the fuel ?

what should I look for buying used
Seems like you got some good advice above on size…as far as buying used if that is your plan, I’d get familiar with tire markings and their meanings, especially load, speed ratings and the age of manufacture. Good tires are expensive and what looks like a great deal may not be if it needs new shoes.

The other item I would look at is what is your ramp loading plan? Personally I like fold down / knee kickers, but you may need some extra length depending on how you plan to load the trailer. But I guess consider you want removable ramps or fold down, or maybe slide in.

Finally tool boxes in the trailer are a plus IMO and really helpful.

If you have any intention to load the trailer deck from the side, a deck over would be my preference.

I'm no expert on aviation, but two immediate thoughts come to mind;
- more weight requires more energy to simply get off the ground.
- a plane is acting against two forces. Drag and gravity. More weight requires more energy to keep gravity from winning.

What I can say for sure is that my toy hauler (rounded and sloped nose) takes about 11 mpg to tow regardless of how I load it. It weighs about 13k fully loaded, or 11k if it's lightly loaded. Conversely, my bull nose cargo trailer (flat front) takes about the same fuel but weighs 4- 5k less than the TH on the same trip distance. What's more, towing a 6.5k boat (very aerodynamic) is 13 mpg.

you keep going longer, it gets harder to maneuver around in tighter areas, IMO

also have to look at the vehicle pulling it. Once you start getting to 22-24-26 foot, the trailer gets bigger and heavier, and with a load on it you WILL want a 3/4 ton. Minimum. Can your toyota cuntdra or ford Maverick pickup pull it? Probably, but will it stop it? Will it control it if you have to swerve? Will the tires (usually passenger car tires) handle the additional weight and load?
