Yes they do. I have seen them for sale in Missouri, but in Illinois we are required for all axles to have brakes.

Montana requires every wheel to have brakes on trailers with a GVW of 3,000 lb or more. The brake system must work for 15 minutes after the trailer goes AWOL. However, those trailers don't require chains!

I enjoy these trailer discussions since they get me thinking, they force me to do some research and I end up more informed. I have a bit of a trailer obsession in that I have five including two dump trailers, an equipment trailer, an aluminum utility trailer and a rolling chassis from a camper.

Well got me beat, Horse trailer, 5th wheel RV, 6x12 enclosed and a 5.5x10 flat. I am considering selling the horse trailer and flatbed to get a 10K 24'.

A weight distribution hitch with the friction bar can be a problem if you backup and get the trailer at too much of an angle. The bar can bind or get pinched at extreme angles causing it to be bent. It is not about the chains or the spring bars. If you will be twisting at a sharp angle, just pull the two clips and take it off. Many people will spend more money for the brands that don't have the friction bar, but I hate the ridiculous steel on steel friction with all its grinding and groaning and do just fine with the friction bar.

You should look at an Anderson hitch. It's only good for 14k lbs but is an amazing piece. Uses chains to shift the wight and a tapered cone for sway control. But pricy, but I'll never use another distribution hitch in my life.
