Trade-ins?

If you bought your tractor new, did you have something to trade in? I'm curious how satisfied you were with your deal, or if you wish you'd done something differently.

Just the money I was going to spend on a new truck... Only thing I'd change would be doing it a year or two earlier instead of talking myself into it for so long.

I was very happy with what the dealers were giving me for my trade with the exception of one dealer. That dealer was 2K lower in what they would give me on my trade and also 1K higher on the cost of the new machine. That's a 3K swing overall. Needless to say, they didn't get my business.

Since I was shopping around and knew the specifics on what I wanted on the new machine, it was easy to get written quotes via email. They also were willing to give me my trade quote sight unseen other than some pics I sent to them with a full listing of all accessories/parts I had for it as well.

I honestly don't think I would have gotten more for my trade in a private sale and I didn't have to fool around with advertising and dealing with tire kickers without the cash. Dealers are also able to offer financing on used machines, where I was not.

I had an old Ford 2000 gas, but I didn't think I could get anything for it. It was more use to my friend at the farm. So I made my deal without a trade.

Ignoring the unusual exception, you will almost always come out $$$ ahead if you sell rather than trade. because your dealer will expect to make money on both your traded tractor and your new one.

I asked one time about trading in my BX on a new one, and was told that when I was in the market for a new tractor to sell the BX outright

It seems Kubota holds their value pretty good

Either that or there are a whole lot of over optimistic people trying to sell old oranges.

Thanks for all the replies. The funds for my upcoming tractor purchase will come from the sale of a older Chevy 3500. The purpose of my original question was to help me decide whether to use it as trade bait or just sell it outright. I'm assuming I can get enough out of the truck that I won't have to finance too much of the tractor.

I arrived at the same conclusion. The 2 preowned machines were not worth the money they were asking! 0% for 84 months meant I laid out less cash for a new machine plus the insurance from Kubota was reasonable.

Now I'm just living the dream!

I priced out a new replacement for my existing "home" tractor. Am I ever glad I was sitting down when the salesman handed me the quote sheet! I now own three Kubotas of similar size and capability, paid cash for them one at a time, and in doing so spent only a little more than the price of one brand new, similarly-equipped tractor.

Thanks, I'll keep enjoying my slightly older hardware rather than having a monthly payment. Besides, all three of my tractors were made in this century which is a real treat to a guy who has always been accustomed to working with tractors that were at least 30 years old!

I traded my L2850 when I bought the L4630. The 2850 required a full front axle rebuild, it had deteriorated to the point of rendering the machine not usable.
In that case reselling it privately would be a long slow process so it made sense to get back to work by trading.
I prefer trades whenever equipment or vehicles are not in perfect operating condition just because you walk away without recourse.

Thats a good thing if you can do it,maybe the dealer had a buyer for that Mdl tractor, I never see trade in's at the dealer close to me in fact I see very few trade in's at the green tractor place too now that I think about it
