Sometimes when you start watching a youtube video, it leads to another. This happened to me today, and it was a tractor auction in December 2019 in Illinois. About 6 minutes into the video, the auction is being filmed. a Kubota BX 2380 with 2.2 hours on it, sold for $11600., which was a few thousand dollars below retail for a new tractor. I only mention this, because when looking at the sale fliers, one can quickly see that the assortment of equipment is huge, and that there are a lot of good buys at this auction. If I lived closer, I think that I would attend just once for the experience, and more often if I were looking for a new tractor.

The few thousand dollars below retail you reference is probably not the total cost. I have yet to see a terrific deal had on a tractor purchased at auction. Also, some of the things sold will no doubt have problems. They are successfully selling at auction high end real estate these days sometimes for more than it was originally listed for sale. Think about that. An auction leads many to believe a bargain is to be had and often that could not be further from the truth.

I got a terrific deal on my old BX2650 - $2K for a 2,000 hour machine with mower, no loader. But a different market (NZ auctions are a bit different than USA), and in a sense I got lucky - I knowingly took a risk. I bought sight unseen, and the auction house were unable to say whether it ran or not - so it was sold on the assumption it didn't run. Turned out it ran fine and nothing was wrong with it. So yes, a deal, but probably a 50/50 chance it could have needed thousands of dollars of engine work. If you're willing to put labour in, and willing to take risk, I do think there are deals out there. But there are also a lot of duds.

Keep watching TTWT videos on tractors at auctions…..he ended up having a terrible experience. He bought a stolen tractor…paid for it then had it taken from him by authorities. Not sure he ever recovered his money.
It's like " winning" an auction on ebay! You don't win anything you just paid more for it than anyone else was willing to! Around here Kubota's go higher at auction than we were able to get on the lot! We sometimes took tractors to auction for that reason.
I have bought lots of things on eBay much of it stupid. The truth hurts as go find my recently purchased vest made from Brazilian cargo tarps. Not kidding. ($89)
