Good morning all. I am reassembling a l3240 and my torque wrench broke. I have to install the flywheel. Does anyone have a problem with just pulling the flywheel bolts down good and tight? The wrench company will replace it but it will probably take a week or 2. I don't want to wait that long or buy a new torque wrench.

Thanks Mike

Mike, probably happens all the time. After you've wrenched enough you get a feel for what a bolt can stand.

Do you have a friend you can borrow a wrench from? Or a local shop you deal with, or check one out at local auto parts store (which probably isn't any better then you "guessing").

All depends on how anal you are!!!

Thanks Cat. We thought about the auto parts thing but came to the same conclusion you did. As for being anal, that ain't me. I figure that if its supposed to be 78pf, 110 might be better. It's like I heard a guy say "if the stop lights are timed at 35 mph they are also timed at 70 and 105".

Now be a little cautious with the over tightening aspect. In America, we believe if a little if fine--more is better yet. Not so!!

A few years ago I was doing a trenching job out in the country working by myself. Had the line buried and was tightening PVC compression sleeve. Laying on my belly over a hole in 100 deg. heat reaching down as far as I could with a 24" pipe wrench tightening the nuts on both ends. I though, just like you, this is good, more is better. I busted the threads on the nut. Had to remove the thing and start over. I'm slow learning some things, but I learn quicker in when in uncomfortable positions.

Right you are. One good thing about being my age, over tightening anything is painful. I'll just pull until the arthritis in my hand clicks.

As much work (and mess) as it takes to get in there, the amount of strain/vibration/impact that faster experiences, and the amount of damage that could be caused by a failure (too tight OR too loose), I would go buy a new torque wrench before assembling without one...

On something that hard to get to I would want to make sure they were at the proper torque. I mean it's not like it's as simple as going back to check the lug nuts or something like that. If it fails you'll be splitting the tractor again.

Autozone and places like that have tools they will let you use for a small security deposit. Might be worth checking into that. Of course I'm pretty anal when it comes to torque. Just my $.02

A wrench, a tape measure and a scale. And a calculator. 75 foot lbs is exactly what it says. 75 lbs on a one foot bar. Half as much on a bar twice as long and so on. 1 foot pound is 12 inch pounds.so if i weigh 150, all my weight on a 6" bar would be 75 foot lbs.

I was really having a problem with trusting a borrowed wrench. I have a couple of others that I don't trust. As it turns out, the broken wrench had a lifetime warranty. I contacted Tekton by email and they said they would put a new one in the mail yesterday. I was amazed at their instant response. By the first of the week, I will have one that should give me exactly 78 foot pounds. Thanks for every ones input.
