Yesterday I removed the front tin, the block heater and drained the coolant. Today I pulled the steering wheel and removed the dash panel - what a PITA. Plus mice had been in it . Lots of rusty pan heads, a little dry rot on some wires and the usual corrosion to deal with.

Is there a way for me to test the cable driven hour meeter while it's out? How about the flasher unit? there's a wire broken on the switch. I want to get this all sorted out before I paint and reassemble it.

Yes! Run a small wire from a 12v battery's positive post to the positive terminal on the meter, and a small wire from the battery's negative post to the negative terminal of the meter. Meter should begin ticking off the seconds. Your WSM should give you an idea of which terminal is positive if it isn't marked. Or you can figure it from your wiring harness. (I "think" it doesn't hurt to hook them up backwards, but I wouldn't do it myself even if I was hoping the worst thing would be that it ran backwards. It is possible that hooking it up backwards would let the smoke out of the little bugger!)

Flashers can be tested pretty easily, but I don't know how. <shrug>

I forgot to mention this is a cable drive meter. I was thinking hook it up, chuck the other end in a drill and let it spin to see if it will move forward. The cable seems fine.

Mike, "chuck the other end in a drill and let it spin..." will work. Try to get some lube in the cable housing to keep it free. White lithium grease works good.

I shot some fader lube in the back of the tach and put some oil down both ends of the cable. Then I chucked up my drill and taped it to 2500 rpm and works fine.

I found the problem with the flasher - I was cleaning the terminals and two fell off. :D

At $55 I'm going to drill the base for wires and solder color coded wires on then use weather proof spade connectors on both ends and see if it works. The molex is toast anyway. There was a freakin' bug's nest in the housing - how dare they?
