I am very happy with the 'tightness" of the fit, but I do see that the threaded part is a "wee bit" too long so I gotta trim it down a little.

No problem, I break out the facing bit again,and as soon as I touch it..BAM

At this point, I can't say for certain how long I was kicking and throwing sh!t around for, nor can I recall with any mental clarity exact how many curse words I strung together, but lets just assume it was one of my "more vulgar" and "more violent" episodes.

I have about 8 hours into this motherfu@@er right now and I am furious to say the least.

My wife did not even come down to try and calm me down......It was that bad.

At this point I turn the lights off and go mow some grass. You have learned a lot so bill it to your educational expense account.

Next time drill a bit smaller. Find a drill bit that fits the hole in the JIC end of the banjo or even a bit smaller. And get/use some better bits. A 1/8" cutoff blade is perfect for that thread undercut. you dont need much depth or width Chamfer the end of the thread before single pointing.

Looking back I made the "main hole" too big and "hogged out" too much for my "under cut"

I wont make that mistake again.......

Now I'm in some sort of mental "state of shock"

It put me in a sort of "fight or flight" mode, and I decide there is no way this motherfu@@er is going to win.....

I decide to Double Down, so I cut another piece off and have at it again......I did every thing right......

Except for taking too much off when I was threading it.....so the threads were too loose.........DAMN IT TO HELLLL!!!!!!!!!

I cut another piece off and do it again.....................

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So after 14 hours, and an "emotional roller coaster ride", I had "my first custom bolt"

Later that night we had people over, and I was showing it off and boasting as if I had just split an atom. LOL

Now I just gotta make one more and hope/pray that it works.

I forgot to add that I am super happy with the fit as compared to the "test nut", my bolt has no "slop" at all.

See - now you are getting faster and better. That is the hallmark of "machinist" and that is a fine piece of work. I think landfall is just over the horizon.

Sometimes you just have to put lipstick on a pig and call it a day and start over tomorrow. Been there done that, and lived to enjoy another day. Best of luck in getting it finished before 2024! LOL..

Well I just got back from testing her and she works just fine so far.

I haven't had time to actually install it yet, but there are no leaks currently and it is going "in and out".

Diary of a Madman Part II

Would you do this again?........In a word, Yes.

There are those that will be say "You could have bought one for a lot less money/time/hassle" and I would say that's true.

However (and there is always a "however") I more or less backed myself into a corner, so in order to 'win", I forced myself to learn new skills. It turned out to be a "pride" thing for me, and now I am thinking about tackling the "little" one.....

I ended up making a third bolt "just for fun" and it only took me 45 minutes, so there's that too.


How much has it cost you in dollars? Again it's hard to say for sure. Bookkeeping is certainly NOT my strong suit and it might even depress me a little if I actually put "pencil to paper" and found out. Including new tooling and F-ups and extra parts, I'm guessing $1,000-1100.

Oh and if I billed for my time, it would be insane.........

However I do have a "one of a kind, artisan, custom" bolt for sale.....only $900

(Just think about if you had a chance to buy the "Mona Lisa" from Rembrandt back in the day )
