Hi
I have a 2006 TLB 48 ( L48 ) with approx 320 hours as of 2/19/2011.
Approx one year ago as I was driving the tractor up the driveway the motor suddenly rev'ed up to what must have been 4000-5000 RPM, faster than any diesel I have ever heard. I threw black smoke like nothing I have ever seen and the switch would not shut it down. I had to pull the fuel line off of it to get it to shut down. I called my dealer and spoke to them about it, asking as to what I should do. They told me to start it back up and see how it did. I changed the oil, I was afraid I may have had fuel in the oil, and checked all fluids, everything was ok. It started back up and has been running for the past year w/o issue. The dealer was unable to find the cause and basically told me they had never heard of such a thing and they also spoke with Kubota engineers and they were unaware of any issues. They sent me home w/o any diagnosis and a hefty bill.
The exact some issue happened again this weekend, only after I restarted it approx 20 minutes later it did the same thing.
The only similar issue is that the backhoe has been on both times. I was driving it one time and using the backhoe the other time.
I contacted my dealer again and they said they are not really interested in looking at it as they have no ideas on what would cause this.

I am thinking a bad injector pump? Bad governor? But why wouldn't the switch shut the motor off? I'm pretty sure it's not running off of oil, like I have heard some people say as the oil level is fine and when I pull the fuel line it will shut down.

Thank you for your help

Mike

Gotta be a pump issue. Diesel's run ungoverned, it's purely a fuel issue. Something is causing the pump to dump boatloads of fuel to the motor. People do it all the time with their diesel trucks, that's why you see some of them putting out a "smoke screen". Hopefully Vic has heard/seen this before and can help out with a fix.

this sounds like this has happened in the winter and your crank case vent is freezeing up when the temp dew point are just right
this is just a S.W.A.G. on my part

It's probably an injector pump issue, BUT, diesels do not run "ungoverned" as mentioned earlier. True, they are not governed by a butterfly valve as a gas engine is. But there is a governor assembly in the injector pump system. In your case probably either the injector pump governor is sticking, or a spring has broken. Awfully low hours for either to happen though.
Make sure all external throttle linkages and stops are in their proper place before assuming the pump needs work.
