Seeing an uptick in the number of ticks the dogs are getting. Time to knock them back IMG_3034.jpeg

I have found that the best way to keep the ticks under control is to keep the grass cut short. I also realize that sometimes that isn't possible, and that spraying is a good alternative. My wife brought home a bottle of spray that you put on the end of a hose to do the front lawn, but so far I haven't needed to use it. Our dog is quite small (about 5 pounds soaking wet) and only uses the front lawn. When we had the Weimeraners, German Shorthair, and Greyhound, they roamed our woods and we had flea and tick collars on them. The worked very well and when the chemical spot treatments came out, we used those (Frontline) with success. I am just not certain how safe those types of products are for the dogs long term.

We could mow the entire 5 acres but we like the cover. I do have a 8’ wide path around the tree line. That helps as well. I made sure to go in 20-30’ on the trails the deer use and really coat the brush. The ticks aren’t as bad as last year so I think the tick tubes may be working. I’ll do another round of them in late October.

Reduce the deer population and use Permethrin.

Deer are some but the other critters are responsible for keeping that population high. Mice, voles, raccoons and rabbits to name a few. What we see for deer is down this year compared to previous years. We would get a herd of 8-15 every evening. This year we may get 1-3 a couple days a week. Not seeing road kill around the area so my guess is one of these larger farms that is no longer being worked has become a sanctuary for them.

About to do the same myself…I just have a small spot sprayer I carry in the bucket. But it works OK. Now it just needs to stop raining for a day.

Get a few guinneas they’ll clean em up just have to get used to the noise plus they are excellent watch dogs
The way it’s going they will be cheaper than buying the chemicals. Wonder how they do against coyotes and hawks?

Unless coyotes come in during the day not a big worry they roost up in the trees owls like em though hawks never bothered mine I’m assuming cause of their size

Do you put out feed then to keep them nearby? We have Great Horned owls and Barred Owls nesting on our property. They usually pick off the neighbors cats but those have been running low. The coyotes are usually a dusk/ night visitor. Maybe you will see one during the day.
