40 miles south of Kansas City
A young man asked his grandfather, "Grandpa, how did you live in the past without technology . . .
without computers,
without Internet connection,
without TVs,
without air conditioners,
without cars,
no cell phones?"
Grandpa answered:
"As your generation lives today . . .
there are no prayers,
there is no compassion,
there is no respect,
no real education,
there is no personality,
there is no shame at all,
there is no modesty,
there is no honesty.
We, the people born between the years 1940-1980, were the blessed ones. Our lives are a living proof."
* While playing and riding a bike, we have never worn a helmet.
* Before school then we played and again after school until dusk and hardly ever watched television.
* We played with real friends, not virtual friends.
* If we were thirsty, we would drink tap water, or water from the hose, not mineral water.
* We never worried even as we shared the same cup of juice with four friends.
* We never gained weight by eating plates of pasta every day.
* Nothing happened to our feet despite roaming barefoot.
* We never used food supplements to stay healthy.
* We used to make our own toys and play with them.
* Our parents were not rich. They gave love, not stuff.
* We never had a cell phone, DVD, game console, Xbox, video game, PC, internet, chat . . . but we had true friends.
* We visited our friends without being invited and shared and enjoyed the food with them.
Parents lived nearby to take advantage of family time.
* We may have had black and white photos, but you can find colorful memories in these photos.
* We are a unique and the most understanding generation, because we are the last generation that listened to their parents.
And we are also the first ones who were forced to listen to their children.
* We are a limited edition!
Take advantage of us. Learn from us. We are a treasure destined to disappear soon.

no real education
And who’s fault is that..?

In the local newspaper today….the Front-Page Major Headline regarding our school system is:

”School District hires coaches”

When my wife taught 5th Grade in Blanco, Tx (ten years) …the 5th Grade SchoolBook Budget was RAIDED by the Football Coach … Instead of new textbooks to replace the worn-out and outdated ones…. The school football stadium got New Concrete Parking Lot Stops and painted parking spaces. The “coach” gets paid twice as much as any other…. TWO salaries…One for ”coach” and another for a ”teacher’. (He supposedly teaches a history-class…but in reality, he’s “busy” developing new plays or out “scouting”…. while an unqualified part-time substitute is (under)-paid $80/day to baby-sit and argue with kids using their cell phones.

If you want to find fault, who is at fault for all of the statements?
YOU are who posted those statements, D2… I was only hoping to point out ALL OUR responsibilities …. as parents and citizens to provide the education in Every Way to our offspring…..(as opposed to the Haughty and Holier-than-Thou response of the “grandpa” in your story.)

There was once a time when Conservatives blamed others for failing to take Personal Responsibility for shortcomings….. some things never change

My oh my.

Don't get me started!

D2 has valid points.

Geo is hailing from the left... and although I disagree with Geo most of the time.. almost ALL of the time.. He/she is a solid counter idealism. I appreciate his input.

But in a perfect world... we could all sit down and have drink... we are probably closer than we all think that we are.

Except for maybe Geo and D2.....

I can't figure it out. Nor is that my job.

But, how can one be an atheist and strive for good? Why does one care, if there is no good or evil? If there is no eternity for us.

I read somewhere that Darwin, the man, came to his senses on his death bed... saying that "All of this world could not happen by chance.".

I think you have the 'order' of that wrong.

There are 'some' folks I might "Sit Down" with....but only after having had a few drinks. Not the other way around. ;)

I've seen my share of parking lot stops.
I gotta say those are quite nice. Are they worth a child's education?? It depends on the child.

re: how can one be an atheist and strive for good?

Easy.. an atheist is simply someone who doesn't believe in God or gods.
You can have good morals without God or gods.

What is troubling, is those that DO believe in God, have no problem slaughtering others .

And those who don't believe in any god, slaughtering more for the sake of an easier lifestyle or political tyranny.

Examples are: Mid and late term abortion. Lenin and Stalin. Mao. Pol Pot. Castro. In all cases, millions died.

On the other hand: Those who believe in God but didn't follow thru with God's direction to slaughter the enemy. So, now, we still have problems in the mid east from descendants from the Philistines and others. Because god's kids didn't do as directed. Centuries ago. They took wives after winning wars and let many live.

God is God. He knows best. He tells men what to do for the sake of good for themselves.

We, as, men, don't always follow thru.

Morals are based on good vs evil. But, With neither good or evil, morals are just a slogan for ones soul to justify being nice.

It is all based on something.

What is it based on is in your soul. That or this is the question. Why?

It does not depend on the child.

All children begin life as innocents. It is the Adults who have the responsibility to care for them…and teach them right and wrong. Parking lot stops in a football stadium is not better for kids than a quality education.

As a practicing atheist, I refute your argument that morals are based on good or evil, that's nonsense. Morals are what allows a culture to adopt a set of rules that mutually benefit the whole and the individuals. There is no such thing as evil, it's a crutch made up by religions to scare the masses into conforming to the so called religious mores that particular sect espouses.
Moral values and behavior came out of the earliest civilizations, even before organized religion came along to enslave the masses. Anti-social behavior was punished harshly and swiftly, and the offender, if he/she survived, was not likely to violate the rules again.
Unlike those religious sheep, I act morally because I know what is right and wrong, and do good deeds because it will benefit others while not necessarily benefiting myself, not because I'm afraid of being sent to Hell by some god continuously looking over my shoulder that professes to love me.
During my early adult years, I struggled to see how so many Christians put on such a pious face, would condemn others that didn't conform to their moral standards, but would screw you over every chance they got, cheat on or abuse their wives, and strove to exert their power over others just because they could.
I have a close friend that is a devout Christian, a good man, who knows I am an atheist, once told me to not be offended, but that I was the most Christian person he knew. I took it as a compliment.
The world will be a better place when religions finally die out.
If I offended you in any way, well, I can't help you with that.

Don’t believe everything you read-somewhere…

Charles Darwin did not recant his work on evolutionary biology on his deathbed. Rather, it is an apocryphal story, with some basis in fact, which became distorted with retelling over time, as well as utilized by polemicists and proselytizers to discredit Darwin.

Elizabeth Reid, “Lady Hope” is one person who spread this falsehood, claiming to have witnessed Darwin’s deathbed conversion.
But, Darwin’s daughter Henrietta wrote in 1922: “I was present at his deathbed. Lady Hope was not present during his last illness, or any illness. . . . He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier.” https://answersingenesis.org/creationism/arguments-to-avoid/darwins-deathbed-conversion-a-legend/

Sorry friends,…but This reality was not difficult to uncover.

Thank you. Good post.

I am not offended. But I think that you know the Truth deep inside. I think that you so totally want to reject what is staring you right in the face. That you go to any length to deny it.

But I just don't know you.

If you are an atheist and have a Christian friend. I hope that you see the Light in your friend. Not so much from your christian friend, but from God.

Organized religions are the problem. I agree. I haven't been to an organised church in years.

Truth in Christ is not religion, but simple Truth.

The devil that you deny his exsistance, is the reason you can't see the Truth.

Respectfuly stated.

Many are so dismayed by it.

Once you see Evil, as I have in my past career... you know that their must be a Good. And an Almighty God.

Thank you.

I hope that you Find Him. Find Truth.

I was hoping to see Charles in the next life. If you are right, maybe not.

What does it hurt you to try to find Truth?

Well.... before thos thread gets shut down, I'll say my thoughts.
Those of us that grew up in the aforementioned decades are directly responsible for the kids addicted to the electronic .e first mentality. How did we go from "be home by the time the streetlights turn on" to "aww, fine! Here is a new phone. Just shut up already" ?!?
Well, somehow I was blessed. My kid turned out ok. She doesn't care too much about the social media BS or the latest phone. She works hard, has a small group of friends, runs with the dog and still hangs out with the parents often enough.

ya aint wrong about coaches and athletics.

Athletic director here makes more $$$ than the principal of the high school! The last principal is my neighbor-she used to live in the house that I live in, and we converse quite often about this stuff. She works at the state capital now in the education system. Quit the principal job. Her and I were just discussing this subject earlier today.

They put more focus on athletics than they do academics it seems. Local school is right up the road from me and they have a brand new football field every so often. New field house (all indoor) in 2019, last year the covered the entire roof with solar panels, and within the last week they've had to replace a bunch of them due to hail damage. Baseball field is 2 years old and they're asking for a temporary tax increase to "improve" it. And, in 2021 they had a budget surplus so they bought a big expensive LED sign that is 25' off the side of the road. Seems like they could have used that $284,000 to fix the baseball field, no? (Yes that was an expensive sign!)

I believe athletics is important but it is NOT the most important. FTR, I participated in football in 9,10 grad, and in my senior year, baseball until I started working on tractors. Couldn't do both, and there was no future in baseball given the coach was heavily favoring 4 of the team players, even though their game was subpar.

I'm working with a group of people, they're talking about bringing back some of the skilled trade classes that have been gone for years. Welding, machine shop, and auto tech. There are a lot of challenges to work through, and liability is a big one since parents nowadays ain't having their kids playing with metal that is 5000 deg F and they're certainly not gonna let their kids play with greasy cars either. So I don't think the classes will be very big, but based on feedback from the public, I think there is a good bit of interest. Whether the attorneys and higher-ups approve it is to be seen.

Either that or mentally ill, or both.
Let's face it, someone that would do such a horrible thing is not a sane, rational person.
