The PTO safety interlock switch on my new L3901 is a piece of junk. Just a micro limit switch mounted on the lever bracket and it sticks on a regular basis. Good news I am now good at freeing it up when the tractor won't crank. Thinking seriously about eliminating it....

same situation on the L33's as well.... I call it my theft deterrent feature.

I have gotten to know to check it when engine won't crank or when disengaging the pto.

We have a L5030 with a sticky PTO switch. Hold lever with right hand while turning key with left. Like Mapleleaf said, anti theft!

When my Range-Selector safety switch became suspect I made a jumper-wire to by pass it.
No other start-safety exists other than the PTO switch.

Then it hit me that my 18 year old grandson and my son in law and potentially others in the future will not have the advantage of those safeties.…and I didn’t want to be responsible for their potential injuries….. so repaired the safety-switch properly and returned it to service.

I’ve tried to keep up with making sure the other end of the cable (at the spring) doesn’t get impeded by cuttings and other grunge from cutting.

Of all the safety related devises the pto switch would be the least of my worries personally.

The L3901 has relatively few interlocks. A HST pedal interlock that works in conjunction with the OPC switch and the PTO switch that also works in conjunction with the OPC switch. . You can actually start the engine from the ground with the HST pedal in neutral and parking brake off. Tilting the seat forward disables the PTO interlock. I would say the PTO switch is of very marginal value.

I was thinking that if the PTO is engaged, with an implement, there would be a heavy 'load' on the engine so starting would be noticeably harder ??

The L3901 wont start with the PTO engaged but my B7200 and old Fords will. Its only noticeable if there is a implement hooked up.

Did that once with a 574 ih and a little square baler hooked up. 🙄 I was pretty young stopped and shut the tractor off to eat lunch, must have bumped the pto lever getting on or off. Man it cranked over slow. Took a bit but I figured it out. Stupid me. Live and learn.
