So this tractor is not in front of me but apparently reading this is semi common so I figured you guys might know the answer. It looks like the shaft came loose and hit the filter and cracked the case. Anyone experienced this? Could I buy that section of case and repair it?

Several questions came to mind. What would you be paying for all of this, how mechanical are you, is the part you need available, do you have the time and tools to do this kind of job. Another thing...would JB Weld do the trick?

The transmission case is $5k.
The front cover is $1600.

Either way I would not be interested in the tractor but maybe some implements.

I second the JB Weld. Consider using the high temperature version designed for use on exhaust manifolds and the like. I have used this on my Kuuma brand high temperature sauna stove with good results. Good luck.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'd also wonder how worn out is the rest of the tractor. The owner figured it's not worth repairing, has it had a hard life and you're going to have a continual stream of problems?

I tried doing what Mikester said...

but
after I waited 2 weeks to free up the 1st tractor and got it running
bought the 2nd parts tractor running, so not a parts tractor anymore
bought a 3rd parts tractor, got it running too
then a 4th was given to me, and I got it running
also bought a combine, for the front tires as they fit the 4 tractors
yeah, got it running, even harvested rye and oats with it
