It was 9:30 PM and he said there was a red light on in my barn. The barn is in the next county 22 miles away. Said he noticed it while driving by, and the barn is 300' off the road. Told him I can't imagine what it might be. Only red light I can think of is a very small mouse chaser gizmo that is plugged into a receptacle, but the light is about the size of a pea and is on a wall facing away from the road.

So he says stay on the phone and I'll walk over there. It was a battery maintainer I had connected to the battery on my 730 Case, had a red light (I guess showing it was not charging). This charger is about 5"x 4"x 3", and how he could see that small light from that distance amazes me!

Told him thanks for being so observant and calling and solving the problem. Glad it wasn't a call about cows being out.

Seems odd to me.

I wonder what they were looking for or thought it was?

Or do they call everyone that has a light on in their barn after dark.

I wonder what they would do if you had an electric fence with an energizer that flashes on the pulses?

What if you had cows with a heat indicator patch (light)?

Does the maintainer also have a green light? Has that ever spooked their fancy?

It’s nice that they called and were that alert I guess but seems odd.

I have a bunch of those "maintainers".
The lights on three, in the back of my 40' deep building, are barely visible when I walk in the front door.
Your "sheriff" has superb eyesight!

Your Sheriff likely has a night observation device. Be my thought. They give the ability to see that tiny light of the battery maintainer from 5 miles away.

That sheriff probably drives by there frequently and never saw the red light before because the charger was working. Something was different that night that caught his eye. It must be a very dark area. Kudos to the sheriff for noticing and following through.

He's a good friend. His family owns the hydraulic repair shop up near the City and I've done business with them for years. He lives not too far away, and said he noticed it going by and then came back a while later and it still caught his eye. The tractor sets in a lean-to that faces the road. I had the charger setting on the platform near where my right toe might be and setting so the face was visible. That little light does a mighty job in total darkness. No yard lights or houses within 1/2 a mile.

I've had thieves steal batteries from my tractors, and he's aware of such activities so he is always on the lookout for unusual activities. I appreciate his vigilance.

I certainly appreciate the sheriffs department in our area. I am fairly rural, but they still do a good job of taking care of us.

Nice to have an very observant LEO.
Especially when you have property so large that your barn is 22 miles away.;)

Here's a picture I took while working on the Cat hyd pump. The Case 730 is in the picture. If you notice the hydraulic hoses on the tractor, right behind the steel panel, at the very top you can see the top half of the maintainer. It is not very big! That LED light is not as big as a pencil eraser.

^^^^^

Neither is the glow of a cigarette at night, but that got more than one GI shot when they failed to 'cup' their cigarette when smoking.

Sniper can see that from hundreds of yards away.

There's a real good reason why stop lights are RED. Bill Nye and others can say why.....but it's a LOT easier to see red than any other colour of the rainbow.

guess I don't have human eyes... just came back from a dump dive and saw the red light easier than the green one ( slight fog here... )

Any time I start a story with "The sheriff called me..." it's never good 😄
The last time the sheriff called me was a couple years ago and a very young man had ran off the gravel road into my corn field. Lucky for the young man the corn kept him from rolling his pickup. Totaled out a nice pickup. Took almost a year to get it settled with the insurance company.
