The couple that bought the place next to us are good folks. Their health isn't very good and keeping up with the 20 acres they bought is a little trying on them. Anywho......I bush hogged about 13 of the 20 acres for them two weeks ago. He asked what he owed me and I told him a case of my favorite beverage, him help me drink em and some dirt out of a dirt pit he didn't know he had. He said that would be good with him. I'm not talking about a huge amount of dirt either. Just enough to fill a crosstie bed for my wife.

This past Wednesday his wife shows up at my door with 20lbs fresh, head on jumbo gulf shrimp and a whole bone in ribeye. She told me if I didn't take it....the dogs couldn't play with one another.......I took the gift.

I got fourteen 1.25" steaks out of the ribeye when I cut it. I vacumme packed 12 and the wife and I are having grilled surf and turf this evening.

Being neighborly to the folks that owned the place prior is how I ended up being given a BX22, B7300 and various implements for them both.

We usually get treated out to a good steak by the neighbors once or twice a year. Neighbors are in there mid 70's, one has a bad back, the other has bad knees. So, if, they have trees that need trimming, gutters cleaned, ect..... then I take care of it. They usually don't need to ask either. They leave for a doctor's appt and come back to find it done :):)

It is nice to hear there are good people out there. I've tried to help my neighbors but instead of being at all appreciative (all I ever wanted was a smile, I like helping people), they complained I did not do it good enough or my timing was inconvenient. I used to even put notes in mail boxes in advance for the days big jobs were going to be done and to be aware the road might be blocked while I cleared a clogged drain pipe or graded the road.:)
So I stopped. Drain ditches are now all clogged, bushes over growing the road. Weeds popping up, mow areas waist high. Except at my place.;)
I am saving a lot of fuel, time, mower blades and basic supplies. :p

The first time I met the new neighbor was in a mud hole on his place. He has a 2" water line from the road to their house which is 1/4 mile of the road. The line broke and he was riding up and down the front of his place looking for the meter and cutoff. I showed him and dug the line up while he went to get a dresser coupling.

I guess there are people like that every William. Several years ago we had a big old snow, had us shut down tight. So I to went to help, plowed out several folks that lived nearby, some of which were a lot older than I. They watched from the windows, never came out to say thank you, drop dead or get the hell off my property. When the snow melted one old gal stopped at the house and demanded that I pay for her rose bush that died because it was buried under a pile of snow. And it goes against everything I was raised to believe, but I ll be damned if I try to help them again with out being asked.

Thanks for sharing, like you I've had some good neighbours appreciate what I've done for them but also got a kick in the butt for trying to help others, makes you wonder.

Good neighbours bad neighbours. I make an effort one time and if its good then all is fine in the universe.

Its in my nature to help people.
Take advantage of my good nature or cause me frustration and things change.

Another shop called me in need of my particular skill. Lil ol lady had car trouble, ignition switch issue. I figured out a work around that took only a few minutes. Saved a 60 mile tow and a dealer to do the repair.
No charge. They also provided their part of the work for free.

So lending a helping hand extends beyond just the neighbours. If i could work for free i would. But only for those that truly need the help.

Frank,

My dad was a lot like you. He did things for everyone he knew and even friends of friends. He raised me to be like that. His motto was, "We do, because we can."

Its a gift, to be shared.

This is a great thread to stumble upon. I really thought this would be a complaint about a neighbor. Pleasantly surprised!***128077;

I see no point in complaining about bad neighbours. Karma takes care of it all by itself. Life's too short to be pissed off for too long.....

Pulling complete strangers out of the ditch after a terrifying slide off an icy highway. Changing a tire for a 70 year old lady on a gravel road 60 miles from town. I do because i can.
But the idiot that blows by me, loses control and piles er in backwards can stay right where he is. The world is safer because of it. If he rolled its a different story.

Last year I had unexpected time off (health issues) and with some of that time mowed several of the neighbors' lawns during the summer. We all know each other better and have a family atmosphere within our cul de sac of 6 homes. Instead of polite waves now we all take care of each other. All from a little mowing! :)
