I was out cleaning the pole barn 2 days ago, and the wind kicked up, and I actually felt the temp drop……It felt like a 20 or 30 degree drop all within 2 minutes.
I went from working in a T-shirt, to having to don my jacket and a hat.
We were in State College for an outdoor wedding at 4:00 PM Saturday it was borderline hot. Four hours later we had a downpour and it started to cool down. When we checked out of the hotel Sunday AM it was "grab a warm coat" weather.
Weather along L. Superior is basically "schizo". Especially in the Spring. More extreme swings in the Spring. High temp last week hit 70F. Day before was seasonal average of mid-upper 40s. Couple days later, this weekend it stayed below freezing. Today, at 1000 it has warmed up to low 40s. Weather swings rapidly depending which side of a cold or warm front we are in and if on or off shore breeze.
Decades ago I tried growing Asiatic Pears. Zone 5 tolerant species. Trees thrived. The problem was always a fruiting bud freezing kill. Never saw any fruit. Growing the past 3 decades a winter hardy kiwi. Buds later. Most years have a healthy crop. Garlic has emerged. Hard neck varieties. Stuck a repurposed snow temperature thermometer into the ground yesterday. Warm radiant sun, but cold air (30F). ~3" down read almost 50F. Might toss a few radish and lettuce seeds into the ground next week. Of course then it will snow.
