Wow! Definitely on my wish list now. I grew up riding on trains and have always enjoyed that form of travel. I want to take the train from Whitefish, MT to Chicago at some point and then fly back.First vacation in over a year. Puppies are worth whatever it takes!I envy you. Been retired for 24 years and can't go anywhere for very long since the wife refuses to retire. She enjoys working even though she doesn't have to. To add to the "get away" problem, is she got a puppy last January.
Very nice. I love that train tour. Another one you should consider sometime is one I think is even more scenic and a longer trip. It’s actually a different track section of the same railroad you are riding in Durango. At one time they were connected.First vacation in over a year. It’s a really good route. An all day 64 mile trip that crosses the spine of the Rockies and many different landforms and vegetation types. It’s really nice in early October when the aspens are turning. But those dates are often booked well in advance. That is the next trip out here.
That elevation will definitely do you in, especially if you live at sea level or at least below 4000 feet elevation. I'm surrounded by high mountains here and experience that all the time. Made myself physically sick one time up on Mt Evans in Colorado (elevation 14,000+ feet) when I overexerted myself.Did the drive to Ouray. Stopped a bunch and did some hiking. Am I that out of shape or is it just the 10,800 elevation? My Native name would be Wind Sucker. I
It doesn’t get much flatter than where we live and we are only around 900’.That elevation will definitely do you in, especially if you live at sea level or at least below 4000 feet elevation.
