I learned from a long time mechanic that grease was a better lube for spiral twisted drive cables. Since they will slide from the drive sheath easily, lube can be spread its entire length.
Just place a little high temp grease, like wheel bearing grease, in your hand the size of a quarter. Grasp the end of the twisted wire drive cable with your thumb and forefinger and pull the length through the grease with the other hand. Your thumb and finger remove excess globs. all your wanting to achieve is to fill the little space between the wires with grease. Its simple and about as quick as reading this. It does not need gobs and blobs because you should be serviceing these and the drive gear every 1 to 2 years anyway. Slip it back together and your golden.
Good Luck!
