Don't need to in most cases, but there are AV (anti-virus) products out there. I use AVG for my Android phone. If it is a Apple tablet, even less reason to install AV, as the operating system is different.
If you choose not to use any AV, then just be careful with what you use it for - post no personal information and don't do online banking/shopping.
I just went through a full day of screwing around with my wifes old Galaxy 2.0 running Android 4.2.2 I tried to upgrade it to 6.0 (unsupported). I had to revert it back to the original OS due to compatibility issues (hardware and software issues).
I've learned all about factory resetting, bricking and unbricking it. Now that I know, maintenance is really very simple, easier than with a PC.
Basically, if you do not try and modify the operating system like I did, any time you have a problem, 'fixing' is extremely easy. Connect to a computer, and copy all files (pictures and similar) you want to save. Depending on the tablet, there is a trick (combo of buttons) to get you in to the reset mode. Run the reset. Assuming you had back up settings enabled, your device will be back the way it was when you bought it with all the apps you installed and logins/passwords. Then if you want, you can copy the files (pictures, ect) over and it will run like a top.

The tablet was a gift, Im not sure the someone is trying to tell me something or what. What I do know is my fingers are to big and hit lots of wrong stuff and in fact I
sometimes I dont even have to touch the screen and it does the wrong things,, so I guess things are about normal with these things,,lol

Will jump it anywhere from 20 pages to 60 Usually takes me about 5 minutes to figure out where I was Takes a little practice to hit the right spots on the key board. I'm for ever typing something out and the catching the multiple tab button and it pulls up all the open programs
The bloody auto correct and predictive feature is EVIL!!!!!! And irritating is the minor side effect of it. Sometimes it will down right embarrass you, or get you in trouble depending on what it slips in on you. So..... watch what you say, and Read what you write before hitting send
My iPad is not big finger friendly! Darens' point of proofreading B4 sending is a must. Frustrating at first, but it gets better with a little bit of practice.

I use one of those in my part time job and it makes using a tablet SO MUCH easier
