The spring (and drive belt) fell off my 1880 lawn mower and each time I put it back on the belt falls off.
I know where the spring goes but clearly I've forgotten how the belt goes on. If someone can point me to a picture or diagram of the bottom of the T1880 I' sure would appreciate it.

It shouldn't just fall off like that. Look closely at the two idler pulleys, or three if it has all 3 ( I don't remember). They are plastic and they tend to wear out. I've seen them completely melted, had one actually catch fire because the bearing failed in the idler and burnt the pulley up, and of course had a bunch of grass clippings built up too.

Also on the T-80 series sometimes the idler bracket itself gets loose and the arm that the idler is attached to just flops around. Belt won't stay on when that happens.

IIRC there are no belt diagrams, but I think you can use the parts diagrams and figure it out. Diagram D73000 if I remember correctly.

You may be able to look at the pulleys to help also. The back of the belt will contact the flat pulleys and the pulleys that look like a vee the belt fits in the inside vee side of the belt runs on.
