I'm helping friend trying to get a T1400H Serial#16406 back in use. Starts and idles until you engage mower deck then stalls out. A local repair shop said the carb needs replaced and wanted $700. (Does this sound like the right diagnosis?) Its older so we brought it back home with the hopes of doing it ourselves and removed the Carb. From what I can tell, the part# from the websites says the carb part# is 12181-4401-0 and its marked as discontinued. I pulled the Carb off and its marked Makuni and hard to see but either T7X1 or TYX1 and GB400 or GR400?? Anyone have information on where to buy a Carb for this tractor or will it perform well with a rebuild. I'd rather sent it out for a rebuild if so, any recommendations? Any ideas?

You just need to keep shopping for a repair shop, preferably small and ask them to clean the carb. This is a high quality carb and can be cleaned and may not even need any parts. Some places have ultrasonic carb cleaners much like the jewelers use to clean your expensive stuff.

Dont start trying to take it apart. The main jet is brass and if you use the wrong screwdriver you will rip off the slot for unscrewing it. Under the main jet is an emulsion tube with tiny holes which get plugged. If you cannot remove the main jet you cannot get at the emulsion tube and then, it may be time for a new carb so dont try this at home

Dave pretty much has it right, likely the tiny ports are blocked and need to be thoroughly cleaned. I have done many different carburetors and found the biggest issue is crappy gas turning into a nasty sludge that eventually hardens.
Dismantling most carbs is straight forward, but if it has some age the bowl gasket/o-ring will not go back in. Or it will break.
Im not encouraging you to go ahead and tear it apart,but if owner isnt prepared to buy a new one then maybe a shop should look at it.
Wonder if parts are available for carburetor or just whole unit itself.
Measure bore on engine side in mm and try a search for mikuni butterfly carb xxmm.
Most are identified by bore diameter.
I got a mikuni copy for a honda atv of amazon for 25 dollars last year. Wonder if something like yours is available too.

Thanks Frank, Yeah I found a specialty shop in FL (I'm in Pgh PA) that does Carb work. I emailed them and will call them Monday. My intentions are to send out to them or anyone else qualified that we may find.

Some times it's just the jets being clogged. I've soaked them before with carb cleaner. After finding where the ports for the jets go, I've been able to use the straw attached to the spray can of carb cleaner and been able to blow the gunk out of the jets. Sometimes I've had to resort to compressed air after a good soaking

I don`t see their web site mention carb kits for either Kubota or Mikuni.
Don`t let it out of your hand until you are absolutely convinced they can do it`.
Do you have a caliper with which you could measure the center of the bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole. + the diameter of the carb throat on the side closest to the engine. A plastic Caliper from Home Depot is fine to use. Try and measure in mm i.e. milimeters

Thanks again Dave. Have way down their site they simply mention Carb Rebuilding and to contact them for further info. So yes, I def won't send to them without proper feedback. I'll try and get to them today and or look at taking measurements.
You need to find someone who's got an ultrasonic cleaner. These things are awesome-well the good ones are. The HF ones will work for cleaning shell casings and jewelry but for carbs you need heat; and not all of the cleaners have a heating element in them.
I always like to tell folks to try to find a local guy who can do it; that way if it needs to go back, you know where to go instead of having to ship it back & forth.
Isn't that a Kawasaki engine? I think I remember them saying "kubota" on them, but IIRC they were built by Kawasaki. I may be wrong. Maybe an FC401V? If that's the case, there should be carbs available for it if push comes to shove, from a Kawasaki dealer.

Tractor data shows this model with a Kubota engine, closely related models had Kawasaki engine.
