You need the middle of the cable clamped to the middle of the winch drum. Windings on each side of the clamp then out to the chute. I built a 2 piece drum divider/clamp for my old snow blower. Wish I had some good pictures. I took a piece of pipe and made the ID just smaller than the OD of the winch drum then took a piece of 1/8 plate and made what amounted to a large washer. Welded the plate to the center of the pipe then cut the whole thing in half so it fit over the center of the winch drum. It basically made the winch drum into 2 smaller sections. A hole for the cable drilled through the divider. Clamped the assembly onto the drum and welded it back together. Forgot to mention drilled and tapped the pipe for 2 set screws to lock it in place. You can just barely see the edge of it in this post. http://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7984&highlight=winch

wound the cable around the chute and drum as you suggested but the winch doesn't grab the cable it just rotates inside the cable and I can't get it tight enough to make it work.
Ok, two possible solutions come to mind.

First would be to take a few turns around the winch drum. If the clamp was in the centre of the drum then it would be ideal. But I bet it's at one end or the other, right? Any chance there's one at each end? What about a band clamp around the cable at the centre of the drum with a few turns around the drum on either side of the clamp?

The second thought I have is to apply a layer of sheet rubber around the drum with contact cement. The rubber should then provide a bit of grip for the cable. Or perhaps the opposite: replace the winch cable with clothesline. The coating on the clothesline might provide the needed friction.

Thanks so much for the replies guys, much appreciated. What I did was to drill a hole close to the top of the diameter of the drum like the other side (yes torch only on one side) and then tapped a 10-24 hole for a lock screw to hold the cable in place. Ran one cable counterclockwise and the other clockwise and bolted both to the same spot on the chute.

Going to take kubotasam's suggestion as well and put in a divider. For now it is working but I have too much cable on the drum on both sides and it's bunching up.

Going to remove some of the cable and then put in a divider of sorts out of pipe and a hose clamp

Not finished yet but looking good - FINALLY! :)

Once again - thank you to everyone for their help on this one
