Very frustrated! I just did a full service on my bx2230 from all fluids to filters to Grease. After I put new fluid in transmission, I realized.....oh crap, I never cleaned strainer and had new orings and everything. Now I did all that work, it doesn't feel complete. The oil was terrible in trans and engine amd glad to have fresh everything but now I'm just a butbunsatisfied bc that wqs important to me because I just bought this tractor and wanted everything 100%. Is there a trick to cleaning the strainer without draining the fluid?!?!?!?!?...... probably not but never know. Also, is it really a big deal? I'm fairly new to tractors so I'm still learning. .....alot. what exactly is the strainers purpose and if has a bit of debris in it, is it terrible?

As always do as you feel is best. You might as well get it over with, every time you start the engine or just riding you'll regret not doing it right. I'd suggest running the machine for a few hours and taking a representative sample, if as you say "terrible" then the engine and transmission may need an additional change/flush. if the fluid looks and smells OK, then I'd suggest taking very clean buckets and remove the fluid, remove and clean the filter then reinstall with new "O" rings. When refilling transfer to a clean smaller bucket so as to more easily see if any debris is at the bottom, top off with fresh fluid. It seems that the little time spent doing it right is a very cheap education. It sounds as though you recently purchased this tractor and you want to ensure that it's taken care of. I believe a very through inspection is called for i.e. coolant, belt, tire pressures, fuel filter, fuel hoses, tie rods, linkages, loose fasteners, battery connections, confirm fuse/sizes are in the correct location, loose wiring, etc. That's not to say you change everything out but be aware and make informed decisions. The safest assumption is the previous owner/dealer didn't take of the tractor no matter what he may have told you. Just my .02

I have read of people hooking a shop vac to the oil fill hole, and pulling air in through the opening (and gear case of course) when a filter is taken off. This kept most of the oil from gushing out, but a little was lost, but it sounded minimal.

I THINK I remember someone doing the same when removing the suction strainer, but I think he knew what size the hole was, and in advance made a plug to drive in and keep the hole closed while he was cleaning the strainer, and prepping it for re-installation.

Just a couple possibilities you might try...

Thanks guys, I decided I can't in good conscience just let it go so I drained it all back out, filtered the oil before putting it back in and boy......glad I did! Strainer was riddled with shavings! Thanks for the info.

Glad you did that, and I’m sure you are also, especially if this is it’s first service. Typically the First Service will find the screen full of junk from the manufacturing process and if you don’t do that screen you run the risk of a long-term of operation (to the next scheduled service) with a blocked screen.
Good decidion!

Yes, I feel much better I did. And I don't think it's the first service. It has 880 hrs but wasn't really taken care of too well. I noticed when I put fluid back in, it was a but over dip stick but didn't think I put much over in it. Does it matter if it's a bit over filled? Figured it may go down too after I hook the loader back up and run pto.....idk
