Stimulating a backhoe

I needed to get a little french drain installed in front of a new slab and my trench diggers are on vacation until first of the month. That sort of work is way beyond my current physical abilities and I did not want to wait 2 more weeks so I decided to hack it out with the loader bucket. Worked better than expected and I will be able to close it up tomorrow and get on with putting down the last of the new gravel that is currently piled in the driveway.

All I managed to elicit from Hagrid is a discreet thumbs up but you boys are picking up the slack.

I did the same as you but I was lucky in that my soil is very sandy, with very little rocks. Yours look more clay like? Tough digging or go smooth?

I ran almost 300 feet and was surprised I only spent about 2 hours digging and about a hour back filling.

Nice job. At some point I am going to have to dig a French drain also at the edge of the woods. Not sure exactly how I am going to maneuver in there. Also no backhoe here but I think between the fel bucket, grapple and stump bucket it will get done. We have a boatload of clay and good sized potatoes there, may have to keep switching . . .

IIRC the county health department classifies this soil as silty clay. Contains lots of rocks and layers of shale.
