Wow you got 7 hours out of it? That's 3 more than I did :)

Don't worry, with 300hrs on my 1860 that I bought new in 2013 I can tell you its a very well designed tractor with the exception of the tie rod boots and the front axle seals. Both are known issues that shouldn't be issues but in the grand scheme of things are really no big deal. They got the important stuff right.

What went wrong?

Did Kubota install a defective boot during assembly or did some debris hit the boot? How can the boot just fail - unless it was defective to start with?

It looks like a pain to change.

Many don't even bother replacing the boot and just wrap an inner tube or split a hose and zip tie it.

My wife uses ours and I know one of ours went over a year with one torn and there was no damage.

I'm sure with a little shopping, you can find a thicker one, bur new OEM is fine for regular use.

As said in article for part it is # k1253-01660 for replacement part. Basic google search shows several known dealers for part. Mine looks to be dry rotting but says check dealer for replacement part under warranty

My BX1870-1 has 50 hrs... and the boots look new. I'm assuming they either got a bad batch... or it was ripped when installed.

OR....

Since you said it look dry rotted already... maybe it was washed down with a solvent of some kind. (Trying to remove oil or grease?)

Anyway... I've seen boot threads on this board... but I don't think it's widespread.

The LINK in the fourth post that TripleR made should be added to a sticky somewhere that makes it easys for other to locate. It is a very detailed review of the installation.

I had a boot rip on a Yamaha Big Bear while spraying weeds. I took the wheel off and cleaned and wrapped the boot with Rescue Tape. It is self sticking and silicone. It's been on there about 4 years now!!! (I took a syringe and injected some grease)

It's dry rot and it is a pretty widespread problem. Mine started doing it within a few months of ownership. I purchased my tractor new and it's been stored in a garage 24x7 when not in use. There's no excuse for that, it's just bad rubber.

Bought mine at the end of Dec. 2015.. just looked at mine and they are all cracked pretty bad. No split yet. I wonder if this is under warranty?

Got my BX in March of this year, and both boots have rips in them. I'm curious if the dealers will do anything. They should IMHO, but it does suck to have to load up the tractor and haul it almost an hour.

Since I plan on doing the maintenance myself it may be a while before I need to take the tractor in for anything.

My dealer replaced mine under warranty on my BX2370 with 43 hours. We had to go out on the lot so I could show him what I was talking about to make sure he had the parts in stock. He had a Brand New BX2670 that the boot was already split!

Does anyone know if the new 80 series is the same, or did Kubota finally address the problem, and put a new design on the 80's?

Though it's minor, seems to be a bad design that should have been improved several iterations ago. I will be disappointed in Kubota if the 80's are unchanged.

Get ahold of Paul Short (search you tube). Has some some that he came across that are supposed to be very durable.
