I have a L245DT. The steering suddenly got very sloppy. The steering wheel now goes a quarter turn before any results. I bought it 3 yrs ago; was told it had a new steering wheel shaft. Where should I start looking?

Just guessing because I don’t know anything about the L245DT but I have a MF180 that does this when the steering fluid is low. Does the L245 have a separate hydraulic reservoir for the power steering pump? The reservoir on the MF180 is the pump itself so a separate tank isn’t always present.

jim63 is mistaken. The L245 likely does not have a power steering system rather a recirculating ball type.

These older tractors often suffer badly from corrosion inside the steering box from water getting inside. Forum L245 Steering exploded view.jpg

You can try performing the adjustment above but it will be unusual if the steering is fixed this easily.

There are many posts on the forum about L series steering boxes and doing some searching will give you a good over view.

Very skilled owners have manufactured their own recirculating ball tubes, a part no longer available.

Others have modified electric auto systems but these people have high skill levels and often access to machine shop and welding equipment.

Get in touch with 007kubotaguy. He is often parting out older L's and you might get lucky.

This youtube video will educated you on recirculating ball steering boxes.

As mentioned water intrusion generally causes the ball nut shaft bearings to fail which increase endplay in the shaft assembly. They can easily be rebuilt using aftermarket parts as long as nothing else needs replacement. If so it is usually better to try one of the aftermarket replacement boxes if available for that model.

I really hope he's already fixed this issue from 5years ago!
