I am having a few problems starting my tractor and I am hoping some one can shed some light on it. When you start the tractor from could the tractor starts first time. When the tractor is has been running a while and you go to restart it the starter makes a grinding noise if you the turn the ignition off and on again the tractor will start. There is obviously a problem with the starter and or the solenoid engaging but I am not sure which? I also wonder if its worth replaces one or the other or both but I know that gets expensive. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks James

If it makes a grinding noise, it could be either the starter drive or the flywheel. If the teeth are damaged on the flywheel it will grind, but it usually doesnt go away when you try it again. The starter drive has a type of clutch built in it that if it engages, it may slip after several hours of use.

sounds like the starter cog staying out, the starter solenoid throws out the cog to mesh with the flywheel, used to hapen all the time with Aussie Ford Falcons.
I'd start by checking if the solenoid is working properly, 2 bolts to remove the starter and try a start to see if the cog trows out and more improtant retracts again.

I have removed the starter and the solenoid. The ring gear and the starter cog are in good condition with very little wear no stripped teeth. The solenoid has a strong spring in it still and the starter looks ok. I am not sure what I am really looking for everything seams to operate ok. I may have to run the tractor for a while then before I restart it remove the starter again to see if it is still engaged. Not sure if any one else has any ideas.

This is allmost allways the starter roller clutch,ie, bendix. Unless it is totally transhed, you won't be able to tell it's bad. It's whats inside the starter teeth.

Make sure you have clean battery terminal connections and the battery has proper voltage but it sounds more like the starter solenoid.

Sounds to me like IPZ2222 has the right idea.
