I have owned a b6100hst for a few weeks now.the weather here is still above freezing, althought Monday morning it was-5c.
To start my tractor I have found i need to glow the engine for about 15 clicks of the hour meter, then it may take two or three attempts to start, once it kicks i glow it a bit more till it smooths out. I'd do this with about quarter to half throttle.
It smokes greyish black heavily at startup then clears up relatively quickly.
Does this sound normal,or do I need to refine my technique, or should I have the tractor serviced?
Thank you

It's normal on an older kubota to have to glow plug for thirty seconds to a minute when really cold. My l1501 is that way. One thing that I found that helps, is each one has a sweet spot on the throttle where it starts easier. The trick is figuring out where the sweet spot is :) On mine, I watch the kill lever on the floor. I move the hand throttle back till it just contacts the kill lever. Then move the throttle handle about 1/4 of an inch. That gives me roughly 1100 rpms on start up.

it's normal to get some grayish exhaust on start up. It's just unburned fuel.

Good to know the grey smoke is nothing to worry about.
-5 c is really quite mild compared to what isto be in the next 5 or six months

How true, I'm in a much milder climate where it's below freezing for only a day or so. And if it snows over 1" everything shuts down :p

Sounds totally normal to me as well. My 7100 is a little picky in cooler weather. Doesn't even have to be below freezing to need it for 10 seconds or so. I have a block heater, just haven't installed it yet. I would really suggest one of those, otherwise you may use up all your battery juice hearing the block and then when you turn the key it won't turn over. I'm not saying that's happened to me, but... OK, fine. I'm only human, though.

Constantly keeping the battery charged with a trickle charger can certainly help keep it at optimum conditions for starting it. When I had the B7100, 30 secs in cold days, 10 for warmer days. The throttle sits halfway when starting.

Another key tip for you, after it starts, turn the key back to the left to continue heating up the glow plugs to warm the engine faster.
