Hi, New to the forum.
I have a B6200 that I have had now for about 5 years. On Wednesday we had about 30cm of snow and I was doing the drive with my son. At one point he stalled the tractor. No big deal, he went to start it as usual, but the ignition switch stuck in the "turn starter over" position for a while grinding the starter gear on the flywheel. It still turns the motor over, but now with a bit of gear noise that was not there before. Question is what should I do now? Pull the starter and replace the bendix gear would be the first thing I would do, but what is the chance that I have killed the flywheel as well? What about debris left behind killing the clutch? Or should I leave as is?
Any advise would be great. I have already lubed the switch up real good so it does not stick anymore.

thanks

Heath

The bendix has a very few cogs compared to the flywheel, so if there is any bad damage it will be mainly on the bendix.
You might pull it and look how bad it is... comes off easy, not that hard to replace.
Don't worry about the debris left behind killing the clutch, unless you have teeth completely ripped off, there will not be anything large enough to interfere with anything.

The good thing from this experience is that he now will know to LISTEN when starting an engine, if something is not SOUNDING right... it needs attention immediately to make it right... :)KennyV

Pull the starter motor to check the bendix, then to make sure there is no damage to the flywheel, mark it with chalk and turn 360 a bit at a time checking the teeth untill you see the chalk mark again. If you have a decompressor pull it out to turn it over easier.
Nothing worse than replacing a part and the noise has not gone!!

Thanks for the reply guys. I will pull the starter and check. I am really hoping I do not have to change the flywheel. How do you tell if it is too bad to leave as is, the flywheel I mean. Is it ok if there is now some wear showing on the gears if I replace the bendix gear?

You will be able to see the teeth...there should not be any missing...The gap is where it gets bad.The face of the teeth can be faced with a file to true it up and make the new bendix engage easier.
