according to some foresters that I know there are now more trees in North America than in 1620 when the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Who would have ever thought more trees more fire ?

I have seen early pictures of parts of New Hampshire and there are no trees.
New Hampshire was 85% clear farm ground,no trees. Now it is 86% forest/timber land.
The numbers might have changed a little bit since I looked at them roughly 20 years ago

Most forests in the west are way overstocked with trees, small trees with little commercial value, so it costs a considerable amount to thin them. This has occurred due to late 1800/early 1900s heavy logging and suppression of the historical natural frequent fires that kept forests more open. Instead of low severity surface fires that thinned trees, current fires are high severity crown fires that destroy forests.

My heart goes out to all of you that are dealing with these wildfires both here up north and also my friends to the south along with the folks on the other side of the pond. This year we've been lucky so far here on the east coast, not nearly as severe as the west coast thankfully or other parts in the world thank goodness.
