"Big Tobacco, Big Auto, and Big Social all share something in common: at the center of their business model is an ingredient that is severely detrimental to the world. Big Tobacco relies on nicotine, Big Auto relies on fossil fuels, and Big Social relies on user attention to generate revenue. None of these practices are sustainable for a healthy society. "

I think you neglected big alcohol and big pharma. All of them seem to encourage addictive behavior. Of course from there you could get into big government but that might become political.

Their existence and perpetuity is hinged solely on how much money they 'contribute' to the correct politicians and political party.

The entire government in this country has lost sight of 'we the people, for the people' and has become 'contribute the money to embellish us (politicians) and hell with the people, they only count at election time.

I thoroughly enjoy election years. Amazing the promises made but not kept and the outright lies emanated by politicians who in reality, don't give a damn about their constituents, except to get relected so they can continue on the gravy train.

What big business is all about or at least how they perpetuate themselves.

Big social would be the king of them all because it drives or influences decisions about the others, and daily life and attitudes. Theres a great Netflix doco recently about big social, can't remember the name.

Like 'Farcebook'. Everyone tells all including personal stuff on there. What they forget is anyone can read what they post. I don't do Farcebook but I read some of the comments. Appaling. Then there are kids and their nude selfies. Anyone can view them too. All it takes is a bit of knowhow to access the pictures.

Yes, that's the one. It's very recent - 2020. Former key managers of the current social media organisations talking about how their former organisations manipulate searchs/recommendations to create more screen time and thus more exposure to their advertisers = more revenue... mining the user's dopamine hits for $

Why I only use DDG for a browser. I don't like Goggle analytics. Just an excuse to track your browsing habits.

I think the world was a better place before social media.
Trolls and misinformation have completely destroyed the positive aspects of the system.

Never used it, never will.

I use DDG exclusively for research and articles. It's lacking in what's around you for businesses, locations, maps, and shopping.

I found DDG mainly uses yelp for any local businesses and restaraunts.

Problem with that is, unless you live under a rock, you will eventually need it. I agree, lots of bad information out there, especially on platforms like You-Tube. Anyone can post a video for the masses but no one verifies that for authenticity. I watch You-Tube for entertainment only.

Like my one renter decided to replace her kitchen sink faucet (big no under my lease btw). She bought a faucet, installed it which was all good to that point, but didn't install the sealing washers in the supply lines to the fixture (the video didn't show that) so it leaked through the floor into the basement and I had to re-do it. Don't like fixing other's screw up's. Told her to read the lease, probably never did and told her if that happened again, she'd be evicted. I don't play that crap. 2 hours of laying on my back under the sink, removing and replacing a screw up don't excite me at all.

I'm not tolerant of that.

I use my Android phone to search for stuff like that and it uses Goggle but my phone, unlike my laptop to retain the garbage analytics. DDG for the laptop, runs much cleaner.

I sometimes wish the Net didn't even exist. The 'electronic age' has brought about a whole new generation of information access and a lot of it is no good.

Personal accountability people. If you don't like tobacco, alcohol, fossil fuels , or social media don't use it. You probably shouldn't eat at McDonalds either. The quality of life in the developed nations has grown exponentially over the last several hundred years. And thru continued advancements in science and technology it will continue to progress. Read a bit of Warren Buffett.

Ten years ago at 42 yrs old my wife looked up her old highschool boyfriend on facbook. Cheated on me and ruined our family. I filed for divorce and have primary residence for my children. I've never used facebook and never will. Its satans tool. In the last ten years talking to customers and friends I've found my facebook story isn't uncommon as is the age of 40 with other folks whos wife had decided the grass is greener.
I've been told by many that my business needs facebook to survive and thrive and I tell them I trust in God and I've never been without orders. No Facebook needed.

This is about 11 minutes of what Facebook does to all who use it. Zuckerberg is being questioned under oath by Senator Hawley on collaboration between Facebook, Google and Twitter. He seems to not remember much. The chart shows what they do to each user's information.

The quality of life in the developed nations has grown exponentially over the last several hundred years.
Unfortunately, the statistics around, "satisfaction", "happiness" and "optimism" have dropped over the last 30 years. And the results of hopelessness - addiction, dropping out of the workforce and suicide have risen over the same time.

I happily celebrate all the gains technology has delivered, but that in no way washes over the challenges and costs associated with it. We can embrace the overall connecting power of the internet while still objecting to some of its most isolating and divisive uses.
