So much for Thanksgiving dinner

Grand kid just got confirmed with flu(a). All relatives called and no dinner at our house.
We have all the food for a feast to feed 15 - 18 people.
Looks like we will cook it all and make a bunch of frozen dinners for the freezer. Older parents do not even want us to deliver some meals to them. Fear of getting sick.
At least four of the kid's friend are also sick. With a small school district this is sure to spread like wild fire right before the holiday.

My youngest grandchild, 8 years old, was confirmed with the flu on Monday. The A strain which I guess this years flu shot targets.

We and the in laws are invited to dinner at the daughter's house for Thanksgiving dinner. Now up in the air as well. Average age of us four grandparents is about 80, so it is a concern...All grandparents have the flu shot, but still a concern...I feel you pain, but from the receiving end...

Sorry to hear. Flu and Covid have the oldies really worried - dealing with the same with my folks except they are terrified. Can’t help thinking “What use is living if you can’t spend it with who you want doing what you want?” Particularly in retirement.

I am finding it really challenging accepting or empathizing with their terror. Sure, run your own risk assessment and respond accordingly but terror? Makes no sense to me.

There is a virulent strain of ”RSV” going around this season and it’s putting kids in ICU. You might just want to be aware…in case any flu symptoms pop up…. to consider getting a medical professional opinion.

Daughter and grandson just got over the flu. We dropped off supplies on Saturday for her including a crockpot with homemade soup that she was craving. We're still scheduled to have everyone over for dinner on Friday.

Now I am older and realize I am not that far from the grave.

Perhaps your parents are realistic about the odds. You get sick, being younger, you get over it. They get sick...they may not get over it until planted.

The counter argument to your feelings is: What is the sense in dying sooner, if you could otherwise spend more time with your loved ones?

Lots of it going around. Took Mrs. Hodge to the doctor on Sunday, then went to the pharmacy- they told me that pharmacies all over the area were running out of certain meds, and were calling around to see if other pharmacies could fill the prescriptions.

I read an article recently that there is a shortage of amoxycillin because of how many kids have been sick so far this year.

Maybe you should read my response again. I used the word terrified. As in, Only go out once a week for shopping only, wear masks outdoors, avoiding family because they hadn’t had their shots, had been on an airplane, stopped going out to their own doctors appointments and ended up with permanent neurological damage. These guys sat around watching CNN all day.

The oldies were hit really hard with the non stop fear porn. Some like mine will never recover. I am far from immortal at 51 but what my folks are doing, is not living. Sure, they are alive though. Such a shame - stepfather was a very successful aircraft engineer and actually revolutionized some of Boeing’s production lines. Nowadays he smacks himself in the head with his arm about every 20 mins. People don’t make smart decisions when they are terrified.

I can relate to all these.

Our adult son that recently came back home just tested COVID positive Sunday.

Negates grandma and grandpa coming for thanksgiving.

He was likely exposed at work. Has quarantined himself in his room.

I think mom and I are safe from exposure from him. We also have the full series of jabs.

Perhaps you can have them talk to a family doctor or pastor and ease the terror. While most 'older' people will not seek mental health it is a good source of information.
Accept the challenge and try to see their side and gentle move them on to a better point of view.

I feel that pain

I am down with covid again as is the GF. We are holed up at my place for another 2 or 3 days so we're both gonna miss thanksgiving with family. I ain't got much family but hers is huge, and get-togethers are always a good thing on her side. My side not so much.

I have no symptoms but was exposed at church and tested positive. She has a fever and generally feels like poo. So we're stuck at the house for a bit. Or should I say I'm gonna be in the shop or outside or maybe catching crappie for a few days and she's gonna be probably in the bed mostly.

Found the best "cure" for Covid and the flu is Nyquil Cold & Flu medicine. I could sleep through the night without any discomfort.

Why would a high volume of flu (virus) patients result in a shortage of amoxicillin (antibiotic)?
