if you are talking about the chute guard (stout wires in the discharge chute) they are there to stop people from putting their hands down the chute. safety guard thing.

if not this then disregard previous.

Yes, I think that's what he's talking about. I used to have a BX5450 and I think you're right about it being just a guard. The fingers could potentially reduce the chances of flinging rocks, but mine used to fling gravel with aplomb!! 😂

yeah chute guard. i just remove mine. it clogs up more with that in there. take it out and you are good.
