I inherited a Snapon Deadblow (56oz) from a friend who we helped into a care facility. (it didn't sell at the estate sale so he told me to keep it:))
I used it for the first time as a persuader while re-attaching my backhoe subframe recently. A couple of light taps, then one big smack & it sorta blew up on me. As the pics show, two chunks off the face, handle cracked, and the end of the handle popped off. Good thing I wore gloves & eye protection.
I almost never buy Snapon, (too pricey for my meager funds) so my question is:
Will they warranty this, or should I just pitch it? I love deadblow hammers, but this one is obviously way past it's useful life.

Dead blow should be covered under warranty. I believe the only thing they don't cover on there regular hammers are the handles. I can ask the tool man when I see him on Wednesday :D

No warranty 'cause you were hittin stuff with it.
I kidding.
I cant see why they wouldnt warranty it. My rep is awesome, also visits on wednesday. Had to trim trees in driveway so the tool bus would fit.

I have several of HF's deadblow plastic hammers. The main thing is to keep them out of the sun, it plays hell on the plastic coating. I think snap on's version is just as bad as HF's,as I think they both come from the same place...

Used to have a huge one, about 8 lb, with a long sledge hammer handle. Plastic busted off of that one after being in the sun too. Never seen it stocked, anymore at the local HF...:(:(

I have a dead blow set from snap-on. The set I have is built differently then the ones from HF. Course, they could have changed the design at some point. The ones from HF only lasted me a year before I started busting them.

There is a big difference though between Matco and Snap-on's 12 lb dead blows. The one I have from Matco is a black rubber composite like the old carnival hammers at the fair. Snap-on's is just a large version of there dead blow. Co worker bought the one from snap-on and I used it one day helping him seperate a piece of equipment. After that first whack with the snap-on, I walked across the shop and grabbed mine from Matco. The big boy from snap-on vibrated up your arms just like hitting a metal post with an aluminum bat

HF's version of the BFH, just had plastic, covering a soup can full of shot, a metal handle and about 3/4 of that was covered with the grip plastic... I've seen your picture of the matco, I think. I gots to get me one of them, if I can't find a block of elm, to replace the plastic with, on the HF. I miss it, it was the perfect tool for shifting rototillers, from side to side... :D:D

I've had that Matco one for aver 6 years now :D It does have a split in the center of the face when I caught the lip of a polished impellor. But, I can say, that thing has been thrashed hard and still going strong :D if I can't get something busted loose with it, I'll go get tiny (5'11" pushing 360lbs) to come out in the shop and have him throw everything he has into :p:D When he swings it, he has to rotate the hammer 180 degrees every other swing to straighten the handle

The snap on hammers were made by Trusty-Cook since the late 70's. They're an all American hammer. Snap-On started their own process in 2008. Depends on who your S-O driver is if they'll warranty it or not. A lot of drivers will not warranty a tool that hasn't been bought from them. You can thank ebay sales for that. If you're looking to buy new hammers, join the garage journal forum and T-C gives 10 - 20% discounts to members. I bought their 4 piece ball peen and love them!
