Hello,
I'm brand new to the site and also a new owner of very used 01 L3410 HST. I mainly use the tractor for snow removal and it's been running great the last few days until today when the engine starting shooting out dark smoke at high roughly 3000 rpm. I idle down and no smoke. Sounds just fine at 20000 rpm no smoke. No problem starting up and no smoke at start up. Any ideas on where to start, hopefully maybe a simple solution. Also this is my first diesel engine so I'll be hitting the manuals and this site for info. Thank you.

When this dark smoke is being produced, how does the engine run? No noticeable difference, much rougher then soothes out as RPM come back down? Any more details you remember?

First thought is an Injector sticking or not spraying correctly. I'd try a heavy dose of injector cleaner. Go to your auto supply store and get some Howe's Lubricator or Power Service. See if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes it runs rough at high rpm with the dark smoke coming out. It doesn't sound like it's running smooth or strong at high rom. It wants to lower the idle back down on its own if that makes sense and once it idles down it seems to run smooth no smoke. Am I ok to operate it at 2000 rpm for a while? Thanks again.

Agree with both D2Cat and Kurtee, change the fuel and air filters and also run some diesel injector cleaner though it.
Also are you 100% sure no Gasoline was put in the tank???

You can run the tractor at full throttle all day long with no ill effects, so high RPM's are not causing the issue.
Now if your loading it up with something like a snowblower you will get black smoke when you work it hard, just don't work it so hard that its dropping a lot of RPM's, if that happens slow your travel speed down.

Hard pushing with go pedal mashed to floor will do this exact thing. Harder you push, back off on pedal and it will keep going. I never ever used high range when pushing snow, first for this issue, second is if you hit something solid-something will break or bend and third-reversing can get a little dangerous.

And what ^^^those guys said.

Thanks guys I will do all 3 tips and let you know how it goes. I bought a brand new 5 gallon can for diesel so I'm assuming no gasoline got in there. I have a used 3pt hitch blower I need to unbury from maybe 6 feet of snow. I'm slowly getting there, just getting comfortable with operating it with the fel for now. Also I have no idea how to hook up the rear blower. Adventure and me getting very cold awaits. Thanks again this site is pretty cool.

Well that air filter was dirty as well as the fuel filter. There was actually some crud in the clear plastic / glass fuel filter housing. Cleaned it all out put on the new filter and added the Howes. No more black smoke she's running like a champ. Thanks for the advice.
