"smoke" from crankcase breather

The motor on my front mower is blowing "smoke" or oil gas out of the breather hose coming off the valve cover. I assume this is for crankcase ventilation. What could be the cause of this? Its not running any worse than usual (lol) its very old (its a 24 hp, 3 cylinder diesel FZ2400)

well - lets start with the hours on the machine?, not that it really matters but sometimes the hours will catch up to the machine. The smoke you are seeing is probably combustion from the worn rings - is this machine harder to start? Is it burning any oil? One way to run down the problem would to do a compression test and / or a leak down test, I am gonna bet one cylinder or more is losing compression, thus gasses are allowed by the rings - could be worn valve seats too.

Yep it's usually a sign that it's in need of a rebuild. :(

But it could be as simple as a non firing piston caused by a bad injector.
