I think the WSM would be a good place to start.

The engine is in a bind when you press the boom down, but when you pull the lever back to boom up, no engine strain

One guy said it’s probably the float solenoid

Check the manual boom-lowering circuit. The lever is below the cabin, on top of the hydraulic tank. If the valve fails to open, the boom cannot be raised.
To check it, you can disconnect the hose and plug it.
