slow starting

i got a L235dt that I bought this last winter (360 hrs) on it. it starts every time but it seems that have to ride the starter longer than im comfortable with and does not seem to turn over all that fast, which i dont know whats normal for this tractor. i had a diesel truck that acted the same way when the battrie got weak and would then knock out the starter. it has a new battrie. it puffs gray smoke. any ideals

Are you using the glow plugs before you crank it?

Are you using the decompression knob to get it spinning fast and then firing off?

If none of this makes sense - post back and I can explain further.

Do you have good fuel from a fresh source?

Does it have blow-by coming out of the valve cover breather pipe?

hi and thanks for the help, maybe im trying to start it wrong, i turn it over the decompres lever pulled (still does not seam to be turning over any faster) but then i stop and hit the glow plugs then after the indicator says they are hot i then go to starting. the is no blow by what so ever that i see.

Here is the starting sequence to use:
Turn the key to the on position (first click of key on mine (second and third positions turn on headlights and high beams)
Turn the starter switch (black knob on right side) to the left glow plug heat position.
Wait 15 to 20 seconds for glow plugs to heat.
Pull out the decompression knob while waiting, you may need to hold it out.
Turn the starter switch to the right (starter energized position)
Engine will spin freely and should be fairly fast turning.
After a few seconds (3 to 5) push in decompression and the engine should start.
Don't crank it too long - 15 to 20 seconds max.

Let starter cool off for a while 2-3 minutes before starting cycle again if it does not start on first try.

thanks russell, I'll try that. but i'm starting to think i might have a starter going bad because it turns at the same speed (cold,warmed up,decpress lever pulled or not) and it kicks out ever now and then or i have to hit the key a time or two for for it to start turning ever now and then.

Take the battery to an auto parts store and have it load tested before jumping on a starter.

thanks russell, i did as you said and it busted off, still a little slow turning and was warm here today but it was a lot better. and wolf man load test will be checked out. thank you all
