Simple Coolant Question

Simple question on changing the coolant for a 2620 tractor...
I emptied out the old coolant on my Kubota 2620 by opening the drain cock. I closed it back up and started to fill it with water to help flush the old coolant out. The thing is it was at the top of the radiator after just 1 gallon. Do I need to start the tractor to get it to circulate or anything (the manual says not to start without coolant though)? I am pretty sure it is supposed to take 4 gallons and not sure how that is happening...I want to get it ready before I fill it with the 50/50 mix and not sure if there is another area to empty or not.

You'll most likely need to remove the thermostat to release the air trapped in the block. Some thermostats have a bleed hole that helps this.

Maye though I have not seen anything in the manual about a serviceable thermostat. I saw for a BX there was a step for removing the coolant hose and a block drain which could be used though not sure if/where on the 2620 those might be...

If you disconnect the lower radiator hose and remove the radiator cap you'll probably get everything out except what's in the catch tank. Remember when adding water to use only distilled water.

No, I am estimating I got a gallon out when first draining it. Not sure how much was in. Each refill with water to wash out old coolant was about a gallon (I put the plug back in before draining again). I topped it off with the mix and ran it...saw it go right up to the edge after a bit then down, but not a major amount.

Ok. I was not sure if the issue was getting it all out. Or if you just couldn't get it back in. So it sounds like there is a lot locked up in the block. There should be a block drain plug. If you have a block heater you can also drain from there too.

Yeah that was the closest video that I could find too. My drain was easy at the bottom. I even took the bottom hose off to see if more would drain out (in a small tight friggin location). I have not seen any details on where a block drain would be (and not too keen on unscrewing things and god wholes what leaks out). I believe it has a block heater though isn't that for oil?

Every site and the spec sheet for the B2620 indicates coolant capacity of 4.1 qts(not gals)

This makes me feel much better lol! The one I started with was a ecopy of the B2620 manual which had the below and my brain did not click on the unit conversion...

There wil be two drain plugs, one in the block and another in the lower radiator tank.

No, it will not hold 4 gallons. Probably around 1-1/2 gallons.

Well…HELL…!! The FACTORY MANUAL didn’t get the conversion right EITHER!

(BUT A Liter is almost a quart so that 4.1 qts makes sense…. as long as the FACTORY didn’t make the LITERS reference WRONG! (I.E., which is correct…L or G..?)

They just used the wrong unit of measure. Pretty common. Whatever the country of manufacture uses for measurement is typically what I go with. After finding way too many discrepancies like this when rebuilding engines, I've found it to be pretty reliable. Sometimes it's obvious. Like a Kawasaki factory manual that indicates a connecting rod bolt torque of 35 Nm/ 57 lb-ft. Imperial lb-ft is always numerically smaller.
Others are less so.

On all the tractors/diesel engines I've had (haven't look on the B2601 yet though) have a block drain plug located approximately above the oil filter and most have a similar plug on the thermostat that can be removed to vent.

On the Isuzu, all the coolant was drained just with the petcock on the radiator. It did not seem to have a plug on the thermostat.
