I'm considering selling my g1900s with a 60 inch mower deck. It has only 880 hrs on it. The only problem is that one of the drive shaft's u joints snapped. It's the one that connects to the engine. The other end with the little white fan is fine. The tractor is about 20 years old and I have heard that this is a common issue with these series. I think I could replace the whole assembly for $350-400 bucks. I know how to do it but that's an awful lot of money. I would only be able to buy a low end riding mower for what I'm selling it for. The engine runs like new and that's really the only thing wrong with it. I need to be able to mow my lawn but I'm wondering what everyone else thinks. Am I making a mistake?

There was a time when I wondered how on earth anyone could justify a lawn mower that cost even a thousand dollars. But then I learned that there is a huge difference between a lawn mower and a real lawn/garden tractor. Tractor house lists 5 for sale, most pushing 4-5k. I'm with Wolfman. It's a machine!

I say sell it and buy a couple of goats!:D

If you don't want to fix mechanical things, what are you going to buy? How much you going to spend? What you going to do when something on it fails?

Whatever your answers are, when you find something to cut a 60" swath it won't be less the the part you need!

Now reread your question....seems kinda silly doesn't it, considering what you own?

And cheap parts usually mean you get to fix the same thing sooner then otherwise. Suck it up, go to the dealer and get the new part, fix it and get to mowing. Might even mow a few yards to pay for your "expensive" part!

Yep even if you have to take it to a shop and have it FIXED,, the cost is gona be a lot cheaper than something else that will do the same job,, ALSO after you get it fixed and you still want something else, it will be worth a lot more running that not,,just saying

Got it fixed. Phew, that was harder that I thought it was going to be. Just putting in the new shaft was tricky enough. I replaced both U joints the actual shaft and the front yoke. I'm glad I held onto it. I knew anything I replaced it with would be a piece of crap by comparison.

A Kubota held together with duct tape > a cheap mower.
How long did it take to replace that front yolk? I need to make the very same repair...

Now you`ll get another 20yrs out of it...lol. Sometimes its just better to bite the bullet and just fix`em. I have a 30+yr old JD that i just cant replace, so i spent the money and fixed it, so glad i did. My old JD is likely going to out live me, so there was no point in spending the large amount of money buying a new one. I spent $500 bucks fixing it, and thats better than spending another $15,000 for a new tractor when this one runs perfectly fine. He`s rusty, but very trusty.
