Should I get this repaired?

Hi everyone, here are some pictures of steering rod on the left front wheel of my B2601. I think I hit a rock and, as you can see, the protective metal cover got kinked. I pried it back close to its original shape, so I'm not worried about that. But the rubber thing got ripped (probably because of the sharp edge when the cover was kinked).

I'd like to know if I should fix that. It probably would be relatively easy to change (I guess ...) but is it worth it? what will happen if I leave it like that?

Yes, it is easy to replace. Yes, you should replace it. Quality wrenches and under an hour of old guy time.

ok thanks. if it's easy to replace then I'll do it. But could you tell me what the purpose of this part is? is it there to hold grease around the joint? So should I add grease on there while I am replacing it?

It’s to keep dirt/grit out of the greased joint. It’s a very simple matter to cut a square piece of rubber out of an old inner tube, wrap it around the joint and secure it with twisted safety-wire.
(over-lap the edges and leave the overlapped area on the bottom such that rain/wash-water can drain out.)

Much better to have grease in there, than look like a gritty powered donut, grinding gravel, dirt, and gunk into the joint.
Preventative maintenance, is just that. It keeps parts and machinery looking and working as they were designed to.

Replace the boot now or the whole joint soon. Flexseal (I know but I've done it!) can be a good temporary solution until the boot comes in, if backordered in todays world

I just called my dealer and the boot isn't sold by itself (it doesn't even have a part number when I search for it on the website). They wanna sell me the whole ball joint.
I'll see if I can get something at canadian tire or something

I want to say, I remember seeing someone selling just the boot on here. Something they were making and selling. Can’t for the life of me remember where though.

Take some measurements and go to your local auto parts dealer. If they can't help check places like Rock Auto. It's a dust cover.

Dang, I was looking for CV Joint replacement boots for you. If you have the end sizes someone should be able to fix you up pretty cheap with something like this. For $7bucks it might work for your application since its not going to be spinning around at 4000 rpms.

When you replace the boot, carefully clean the joint with brake cleaner and compressed air to remove all debris, and pack it with a good quality grease. The most difficult thing is getting the clamps back on that Kubota uses. I would secure it with stainless steel mechanics wire, twisted tightly around the boot in the boots groove. On my 2002 BX22, I never experienced a torn boot, and on my BX23S had a torn boot in less than 80 hours. I believe that the quality of the rubber boot that Kubota used in 2003 vs. today has changed dramatically.
