Going through a bout of Shingles. In the nerve pain stage, aspirin seems to be best, even trying Aspercreme with Lidocaine. Anybody have success with OTC or home remedies. No itching and blisters are not an issue, just residual nagging nerve pain.

I had some success using Benzedrine and Bourbon. 25 mg Benzedrine with 2 ounces of Bourbon.

Never had them nor do I want to. A quick search came up with this. Hope you get over it soon.

Is it too late for antiviral? Need to start that asap after detecting symptoms. Supposedly capsaicin containing creams help with the lingering nerve pain.

Too late. Need to start within 72 hours and I didn't go to the doctor, trying to tough it out, lol, not as tough as I was last time I had them at 20.

I have a SIL who doesn't believe in doctors; believes in holistic stuff, crystals, gonging, aroma therapy, and all that crap.
Going through her 3rd round of shingles in the last 5-6 years, and she never really gets rid of it. This time it spread from her lower back all the way up to the side of her head near her eye. Several people got together and finally convinced her to see a real doc before she had vision problems. He put her on some real meds and made real progress toward recovery. Not sure what meds, but the wife has texted her to find out. Will report back when we hear from her.

The med was Acyclovir, brand names Sitavig and Zovirax. She said it was amazing how fast & how well it worked. (gotta be way better than listening to a gong)

I had shingles right after or while going through divorce. Apperantly stress will trigger it. I had no idea what it was and was almost over it when I finally went to the doctors. I was really surprised to hear what it was. And yes very very painful.
My girlfriend is 54 and she just got the singles shot at the local pharmacy. Two does two or three months apart.
The guy who works for me his father is 70 came down with the shingles on the side of his head and face. And a year and a half later stil has issue wearing a ball cap becouse that area is still sore.
I'd recommend everyone over 50 getting the shot.

It was my understanding that I missed the window for this drug. I think it was within 72 hours. Now with the pain phase it is just management and I don't want any heavy duty drugs. Benadryl does help sleep.

The Benadryl also helped with the itching, for me at least. I took the Bourbon to help the Benadryl work faster.

I’m glad we got the shingles shots. Hopefully that’s one experience I won’t get to enjoy.

I remember hearing somewhere that the MMRV vaccine was suspected of causing shingles. The reasoning as I remember it was that many people that get shingles have never actually had chicken pox as a child but had the MMRV vaccine.

Not an issue with me as I never had Chicken Pox which I understand is the precursor to getting them. For me, shingles go on a roof.... (y)

Been dealing with this, shingles, for 7 yrs now. Started as a feeling that my left eye was scratched and annoying, went to the docs and they said we'll be seeing alot of each other in the future. I thought 3 weeks and I'm outa here, 7 yrs later and i'm on a 3 different eye drops twice a day and some pills. Damaged my optic nerve and retina and will never get better. Barely had any pain or rash but I think taking lysine daily helped with that.

Mine are on the left side. Benadryl worked good last night so thanks. I had been taking an acetometifin compound with some Benadryl elements but no antihistamines. I think the antihistamines helped.

My wife got it, she thought it was poison ivy, she is very sensitive to it. Ugly stuff, all over her belly. I questioned her how she got it on her belly and what was she doing (and with whom!!)

She and I have subsequently gotten the Shingle shots. My sincerest sympathies to all who have had to suffer from it.

I was concerned about your post so went to the CDC's site and found this:

Some people who are vaccinated against chickenpox get shingles (herpes zoster) years later. This is much less common after vaccination than after chickenpox disease.
