I would clean out the carburetor and know the condition. Moving filth around using solvents is not a real repair.
True.

I drained off the bottom of the carb earlier this year and all looked clean, but point taken.

The settlement bulb ahead of the carb, typical of tractors of the era, is a clear glass square former spice or medicine bottle. It's very clean as well. Same bulb I recall for the last 50 years. I'm sure it's been cleaned out a couple times over that time.

If you watch the Taryl video I mentioned earlier, you will see that the ethanol does its dirty deed in the float bowl where it can be exposed to humidity and air. Also note that the “pearls” cling and may not flow out a drain. Rubber and gaskets may also deteriorate when exposed to ethanol. I consider a solvent such a Seafoam a product for emergency use only, knowing the condition inside the fuel system will keep the engine running.

Should use it as a stabilizer.
It won't always revive a dirty fuel system, but it's batting average is high based on my experience.

You better - - otherwise they'd call it something else! 😉

There's some in mine as well. Just not anything that gives me concern. Was a lot dirtier when we worked it everyday.

Have to turn gas on/off each time you use it. Valve is at the sediment bowl, so you look at it each time you run it.

Engine was rebuilt, including carb and governor, about 40 years ago by my grandfather and dad.

I did have to replace governor a couple years ago.

It may be time to do the carb again anyway. The connection from governor to carb is also about 3/8-1/4" short. Might be a good time to deal with that as well.
