Some time back I was asking about SDR. And I got some good info, I ordered one from Amazon, but it never came and I was nt charged, so it was just forgotten. In this time I understand a lot of new SDRs have hit the market. And since I am not driven to renew my ticket, I figured the SDR might just relight the fire. So the HMAs in here or any one that has gone this route, please give me your thoughts.

I am inclined to believe that skeets account has been hacked and we have another IA hacker.

SDR = Software Defined Radio , ie DIGITAL radio, controlled by a computer.
The frequency you 'dial' is tuned electronically with 'chips' not by coils and caps.

I have a couple and they are fun to play with at times. I still prefer a handheld scanner.

Thanks lifter,, I was hoping someone might give me the 411 on them. I have heard and read that the drivers and softwear programs can be a real bear to load and understand if you are not a puter geek,, which I am not. I guess I am looking for a plug and play, and since code is no longer required after doing a deep dive in to this stuff, it may just light the fire to go and take my tech test,, Some place I still have an old Yaesu FT 101 from back in the day

I never owned a base station of my own. I used to run a MARS station over in Korea many years ago and I always used that base station to call from Korea to the US. The station call sign was AAA3USA but I think that license has lapsed. If I feel energetic later I may look up that call sign on ULS just to see if it is still active. When our church had a push for members to get their tickets, I got my kids and wife involved but still we never had a base station. We each had/have a Yaesu VX7r and for long distance we used the repeater systems. It worked well but we lost interest due to other projects and just life stuff happening.

Anyway, that SDR website that I sent to you does not require any programming or software. You need to read how to use it. To get started just click on any of the sites in the main window and it will open another web page that will have a "tuner" so you can manually input a frequency or use a slider to find active frequencies. When you learn how to use the site more you can find any band you want to monitor by filtering through which meter band you want. Play with it for awhile and see what you feel about it. Here is a link to one of the sites that I found traffic on.

http://websdr4.sdrutah.org:8904/index1a.html

I don't know if it will open the frequency that I was monitoring or not but try it. The frequency that I was listening to is 14290.000 kHz.

Skeets, don't worry about renewing your ticket. If the " fit hits the Shan " who cares about a license. More important you have the radio.

It is about HAM radio. SDR = Software Defined Radio. If interested in HAM radio there are numerous websites that deal with the subject. Just search HAM + SDR.
