Rubber "bird's beak" on BX air filter canister?

I was checking my air filter yesterday, and reminded that I have no idea what the rubber thing does that connects to the lid of the air filter canister. Kind of shaped like a birds beak. In searching I've found one mention that it's a "dust release". Despite my filter getting dirty, I've never seen any dust or dirt accumulate in this part, and even if that is its purpose, I'm not sure I understand why it's designed to collect, rather then expel, whatever makes it that far up the air intake.

Please enlighten me!

Thanks,
Jack

Without a picture just guessing but, from the description I think it is a one way water valve. Water can drip out / closes so air and muck can not enter. All my cars have them in the bottom of the air filter box and at the end of the four sun roof corner drains. All must have the twigs, leaves and muck cleaned out every few years.

Jack,

if the canister collects a large amount of dust, when the vacuum of suction "stops" when machine cuts off - Or as the pressure decrease in the engine, it will empty. ALWAYS make sure it points downward too, typical filters caps can be placed on wrong side up!;)

That is a very fancy version of the simple duck bill device I was thinking. Of course the devices I have don't pass dirt or tree parts well.
Is this the dust drain the OP was referring to? Jeff

Hi Jack not sure if you have heard of Donaldson before but they make air filters and filter housings and a range of air and exhaust parts etc they call the device you describe as a vactuator valve the previous replies are correct in saying that it’s purpose is to release dust from the filter housing they play an important role in the first stage of cleaning the air before it gets to your air cleaner element if the are damaged, old etc they can actually let dust dirt etc to be sucked into the air cleaner and shorten the service life of your air cleaner see the attached link for some information http://www.donaldsonoemfiltration.com/library/files/documents/pdfs/055477.pdf

Thanks Magpiesn5 for best documentation yet on these... I see your location in Perth... as in ozzie land? Austraila makes some of the best equipment for 4x4 off road or overland vehicles.. not surprising with the huge desert areas there.

Also called a duckbill valve and many other names..

The pulsating air intake generated by each piston down stroke pulling in air and then the intake valve closing causes a brief period of vaccuum at the birds beak followed by a pressure wave created when the valve closes, causes a brief burst of air to blow through the birds beak, expelling accumulated dust.

Many different design variations are found on cyclone separators, designed to remove particulates from the air flow. Handy for use on off road vehicles to remove some of the dust particulates ahead of the air filter to maximize air filter life.

The vacuator valve design shown in the above post is similar to the design of the valves in our heart.

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I could not intuitively understand how this thing functioned, but with the above explanation regarding pressure pulses in the air intake, I get it.

Here's a web image from another forum that shows the part on a different motor--the gray piece on the filter housing lid:

Never too old to learn.
I had thought they were just one way valves to vent water. It never occurred to me they could expel dust as well. But the operation makes sense. Now I feel even more compelled to double check the lil' BX.
Thanks for the lesson. :)

Did that anodized and painted black air filter bracket come on your tractor pictured above?

My BX does not have that and the whole air cleaner assembly vibrates like crazy at various engine speeds. I think Kubota made a retrofit bracket to fix that...

Currently using bungie cords to tame the vibration.

Sorry--no idea what tractor is featured in that photo. I stole the pic off the web, and apart from the filter canister, it looks nothing like my BX.

Well that is interesting. The drains I was talking about look similar but are only about 1/2" in diameter. I can see how something that diameter would be opened by a diesel intake pulse. Jeff

The Yamaha Rhino has ones like this on the CVT housing, and the cool air ducting for the CVT housing.
