Looking for a water tank to put in the bed of my RTV so I can water plants and to clean up / cool off myself. Somewhere in the 20 to 40 gallon range. Enought to be effective not some much that weight is an issue. and not too large that it takes up too much of the bed. Does not need to be potable as I don't intend to drink from it, but it would be nice. I plan on using a 12V transfer pump as I am more interested in volume than pressure. BTW: I won't be "spraying" herb- or pesticides. Only clean water.

I found this 26g sprayer tank @ Northern Tool for $99 w/free shipping. Its relatively narrow at 9" wide.

Seems to be the most cost effective as regular poly tanks (Norwesco etc) are more $, shipping is significant and they tend to take up more room.

Any other ideas or thoughts?

Any recommendations on a 12V transfer pump. Amazon has a lot listed. Wondering if anyone has experience with a specific one.

TIA,
Alfred

My personal experience is 12VDC transfer pumps are too slow to be useful. I have a similar poly sprayer tank and it works ok for spraying from my UTV.

For watering I use a 250 gallon tote on my loader forks or on a trailer with 2" water lines and use gravity to drain. I've got a 2" gas powered pump to refill the totes from a pond.

15, 33, or 55 gallon drum ... as for a transfer pump I have this one and it is junk. I have to jump start it every year.
I have a couple of 55g drums and they would take pretty much the whole bed laying down. Standing up they would be tippy. (I live on the side of a mountain so lots of slope.) Drums are not very space efficient, I am hoping for a narrow horizontal tank I can put in the bed next to the cab and leave most of the bed open.

That my concern with these cheap pumps. Not sure what you mean by "jump start it". Most of the transfer pumps I have looked at need priming.

I appreciate your taking time to respond. Thanks, Alfred

Hmm, most of the 12V transfer pumps that I was seeing seem to be rated around 5-6gpm (max, zero head). I think their flow goes down significantly as pressure goes up. Amazon listings don't show flow vs pressure curves.

The cheap sprayer pumps I was seeing seem to be around the 1GPM at 40 psi. I think I will take another look at sprayer pumps as I am now seeing some higher flow units (at higher cost of course).

I currently don't have a need to move that much (250G) water around. If I did, I would definately go the IBC route. Either on a trailer (RTV) or 3pt carry all (tractor).

Thanks for the response. Alfred

I use this to water the garden. Harbor freight 12v pump. Works great.

This is the pump. It was half this cost when I purchased. Geez.

I had an RV pump before, but it didn’t have the GPH to run an impact sprinkler, this one will, but I find it easier to just water with a hose attached.

I have used the Northern tank you listed for the last two years. I built a platform to hold it that works very well for me. I use it to water trees and other plants. The nine-inch "mounting" measurement is misleading. The actual tank is about 15-inches wide. My property has some VERY steep slopes and the unit is stable as I have it mounted. It takes less than two minutes to install or remove the platform and tank. It cost me about $18.00 to build the platform. Photos attached

By jump starting I mean take it apart and turn the impeller while it has power to get the motor to start, let run for ten minutes and turn off, reassembly, and use that day.

I iike the idea of that platform, i might do a variation on it. Looks like you use it without a pump. Gravity feed is probably enough and with the platform raises the output port above the side. :)

Nice catch on the width, I would have been surprised and not too happy.

Thanks for sharing the photos!
