RTV 1140 Rough Engine Does not shut off.

My 3cyl diesel is smoking black smoke after I turn it off. Sometimes it quits when the key is turned off and sometimes it runs rough then shuts off, and sometimes I have to plug the air intake to get it to shut off.

I ordered a fuel selenoid but I can here it open and close when the key is turned on and off. Can someone help?

It might be sucking oil from the crankcase. That can get ugly.

Have installed the new solenoid already? The shut-off relay may be sticking, swap it with one of the others, and try that.
The solenoid has a spring-loaded plunger to push the rack to the OFF position when the switch is shut off. You can remove the solenoid, start the engine and insert a punch into the opening where the solenoid mounts. Use slight pressure to push the linkage in approximately 3/8" and the engine should shut off.

Check the injection pump / shutdown solenoid as Whitetiger describes. If it doesn't shut off properly, it is probably a failed injection pump. There is a service bulletin on this. It describes these symptoms in detail. One cylinder has stopped rotating with the rack. I can't post the bulletins, as I no longer have access due to covid restrictions, but its been out since earlier in the year. It requires pump replacement due to a faulty weld.[/QUOTE]

Is your RTV a RTV1140 or a RTV-X1140?
RTV1140 has the Park Brake mounted to the left of the seat.
RTV-X1140 has the Park Brake mounted in the dash to the left of the steering wheel.

There is only an engine mounted pump, no lift or injector pump. I am waiting on the selenoid.

I put the new solenoid on and it ran and shut off fine all morning. I was letting it idle while I closed the barn doors and it started running real rough, smoking badly and would not turn off with the key. I covered the air intake to get it to quit. This is exactly how it acted before the new solenoid. Any other helpful tips???

I got the new solenoid and it ran ok for a while and then started running rough and smoking again. I tried to shut it off. It stayed running so I choked it out with the air intake again. This is the same as before I installed the new solenoid. Any takers??
