I know I've seen a conversation about reversing the front wheels for a wider stance somewhere but can't find it.

So, my question is, by reversing the front axle wheels to obtain a wider footprint, does it create a more significant strain on front end components? The laws of Physics tell me that there must be additional forces, but I want to know if those extra forces are really significant. Also, by doing this, is the added stability really noticed and does it aid when using the FEL?

Thanks for any and all inpout.

I swapped my fronts and it increased the width 5". That was to closer match the backs that I used spacers to widen 6". Overall I feel a little safer mowing the side of hills and since I don't travel more than a couple MPH, I think any extra load is insignificant.

PS. If you're on a slight side tilt, with a load in the FEL, don't raise the bucket too high. It doesn't make it that stable. Mowing, with a low center of gravity, no problem. Raise that bucket on tilt and you may have trouble no matter how wide the stance. She ain't a dozer, although I try to work her like one;-)

:(I reversed the wheels on my L185DT twice, most recently about a year ago. I live on some hilly ground, with sparce grassy clumps for cover. Every time the front wheels hit a clump, they would JERK the steering wheel big time. Like trying to break your wrists. I have a steering wheel knob, but couldn't hold it with just that. I couldn't take it for more than a day, either time I tried. I imagine it is a heck of a strain on the steering.
The gent's L3700 has power steering, so he is not as apt to notice the impact of reversing them. I also believe the 3700 has R4 tires, and their wheels only widen about 2-1/2" per side, whereas the old 185 with R1 tires and wheels went out 6-7" per side.
You could probably build or buy spacers to just move them out a couple of inches. That might not be too bad.
I now have an L3200 and even though I have power steering I've been afraid to reverse the front wheels, based on my L185 experience.

I wouldn't do it.

Mowing it'd be no problem and on a 2wd it's no problem. But heavy loader work with 4wd and something is goin to break.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I had already surmised to myself that it wouldn't be a good idea, especially with the FEL, but was interested in what others thought about it.

Thanks again.
