Is the rear main seal a wax rope type, or typical rubber lip seal.

I can imagine this is probably somewhat of an indepth job. Splitting the bellhousing open will need to be done. Do I have to drop the pan to replace this seal too.

I removed the starter an saw oil in the starter and on the flywheel teeth. The oil was fresh. I replaced the engine oil recently and added oil to the sterring box. Will check if the oil is thick or not, didn't pay too close attention to the thickness of it, but I thought it felt like motor oil and not gear oil.

Is the drain plug at the rear of the bellhousing a transmission drain, or a bellhousing drain. Looked like a transmission one, so I left it alone.

Welcome! See if the oil is down in the steering box. The box sits right over the clutch and if it's cracked that could be the source of the oil.

If you need to change the seal I remove it in post 14 of this thread.

It's a standard spring loaded rubber seal that runs on a boss at the end of the crank. The worst part of the job is splitting the tractor. I had to get a little creative to pull the flywheel but it wasn't bad. Make sure when you put the flywheel back on you re-index it correctly so the timing marks line up. Also make sure the new seal gets pressed into it's housing square, a good drill press and something big and flat makes an pseudo arbor press.

Pictured there is the transmission drain plug (well one of the three anyway). If it has a bell housing drain (not all do) it will be forward of that directly under the flywheel.
