Replacing cam clutch

I have 2 issues. I split my tractor (L2800 HST) because I thought the cam clutch had gone out again, it was making the same noise as it did last time. They look good. I talked to a mechanic yesterday and said the cable may be out of adjustment. It doesn't appear to be. What else could be making the noise and the tiller quit spinning, gear box on tiller maybe? Is there a trick to get the tractor back together? I get the studs in the holes the collar on both splined shafts but I cant get it any closer together than the line up pins.

SO many questions I have... but need to reply first... Your tiller, does it have a slip-clutch? I've sheared the bolt holding my slip-clutch (guess that makes it a shear pin instead of a bolt). Or does the PTO shaft not turn?

I see you don't have the ratching CAMS, instead you have the locking CAMS (square edges vs. a ramp on one side...). Unfortunately, I don't know how those locking cams work. Would love to see what Lugbolt says...

Thanks for those photos... I may have to split my tractor since I have the old style cams - I ended up selling my tiller instead once my PTO started to skip.

The tiller does have a slip clutch, but I was lazy and didn't loosen the springs and free everything up, so I dont think its slipping.

While it's split spin the PTO shaft and make sure that the cam spins freely.
Lining it up is a trick when you split them there, you need to make sure it's going in square all the way around the case, up / down and side to side.
A lot of times what's stopping it from going together is the bottom shaft collar is not aligning to the shaft or the splines are off a bit.

The PTO shaft spins with no problem. I can get the halves close enough together and then I can reach in with a pair of channel locks, I turn them around and use the rubber handle end to grab the bottom shaft collar and get it slid on to the other shaft while it is still on the original shaft. I think I'm in a little bit of a bind from not being square. I was thinking about sucking it closed by tightening the nuts but I'm a little hesitant to do that yet.

Wolfman's right on being square. Consider puling at least two (maybe 4) existing studs and making pilot studs with the correct thread to assist in bringing it in square. You are vey correct on not walking it in with nuts (do that and you'll have crocodile tears). Anytime you spilt a tractor, try to give yourself as many options to allow movement of both sections in all three axis. The days on hanging one end on a tree and putting stumps under the end have sailed. Hints don't get in a hurry, clean, clean very clean! Good luck

Don't want no crocodile tears lol. That is the reason I stopped last night because I was getting frustrated and I figured I could get on here and ask for advice and give it another try this evening. I do appreciate yalls input.
