Ive recently bought an L260 for my kid to piddle with. Its got a z1300 twin cylinder NA diesel with a bosch piston pump. Everything works but it billows white/gray smoke like crazy at all times and has low power. Its not drinking coolant, the fuel filtration is good and i think the lift pump is working well but will check that soon. Valve lash looks good. Im assuming either the ring lands have been blown off by ether or its got really bad valve seals. I cant tell without pulling the springs.

I am a little worried about tearing it down before i can find parts. Have any of you rebuilt a z1300 in the last few years? Are these common to have bad rings or oil seals?

I had an L175 with similar 2 cylinder and it had a dead hole that would puff like crazy for a few minutes than totally clear up. The rear cylinder ran about 100*F cooler than the other while it smoked and then would suddenly stop smoking and run great. Even temp, good power. I moved injectors and the issue stayed in the same hole. I always figured a sticky ring but sold it before finding out.

Both machines act pretty similar and are hard to start but will run on warm days.

Any thoughts?

Looking on Messicks.com, engine parts for an L260 are available but not cheap.
For example pistons rings at $91.26 per piston x 3

Doing a compression test would seem like a good first start. Perhaps local auto parts places loan the testers in your area.
